For years, I tried to apply business principles to my dating life. I was sure I could triangulate the perfect partner the way that I filtered out SQLs. What worked in sales, I thought, MUST work in life. 🤝👩❤️👨 Last summer, I worked with an intimacy coach. She looked at my list of qualities I wanted in an ideal partner (40% negotiable and 60% non-negotiable) and said, “You have this a** backwards.” Together, we worked on flipping that 40/60 equation. It switched something for me. Traveling full-time for the last 3 years, I had worked it up in my head that my ideal partner would be European. It was non-negotiable that my partner be multi-lingual, well-traveled, and had dated across cultures. Now I am partnered with the most amazing woman who checks all the boxes—except she was from the U.S. like me, and hadn’t lived abroad since college. If I was dead set on my original image, I might have overlooked her. Sometimes being a stickler for our goals can actually mean we miss out on our dream job, or our dream person, or dream deal. 💭 💘💰 So here’s your daily reminder to reevaluate your goals. You just might find more than you were looking for. #SalesLeadership #LifeStrategy

PS - This pic was taken yesterday, with my Dream Partner, at the beach Wannsee, a Lake at the Berlin city limits. We took the train almost 1 hour from our apartment and after enjoying the sun and the water biked through the Grunewald (Green Forrest) for an hour on the way home. Even thought it's already mid-August, feels like summer is just starting here.

I don't think most guys would have overlooked the woman in this pic in a million years. 😂 But you bring up a great point, Michael Carr and this is rarely admitted on here or anywhere else: the non-negotiables in our own minds are often ridiculous to objective observers. Living in LA with basketball friends, I was convinced I needed a wife who was at least 5'9" to ensure giant kids - I really did - so I never would have seen her profile on Match.com. But thankfully she saw me and it turns out my dream girl was under 5'4" - and my daughters are giant in spirit and are amazing. PS I think this issue of over-thinking and putting up mental blockers applies to our career sides as well, which is ironic, considering that's what you had to originally get away from!
