The 12 Messages of Christmas 🎄
...while I support this completely, I think it needs to be reiterated that these concepts are valid all year round 🌟 I think any cluey types will also know we're missing one here.. Christmas message 13: Avoid over-eating on Christmas day 🍗
I'm going to expand on (1) Moving your body your way AND (3) Any movement is good movement, as two key points that I love. While all 12 messages are wonderful in endorsing a positive quality of life, inclusivity, mental wellness and physical well-being, I relate to these two on the reg.
🏄♂️ Moving YOUR body YOUR way speaks to your interests, social network, genetics, sleep patterns and more. It's incredibly beneficial to find a form of movement that resonates with you; and that certainly isn't a one size fits all approach. Run, ride, swim, dance, rock climb. Ball sports, team sports, individual sports, horse riding, scuba diving, gymanastics. Tai Chi, yoga, resistance training, circuit training. The list of ways we can move our bodies is endless. Some modes of physical activity are competitive, others are leisure activities. Some will offer a form of socialising, others may be individual activities that hone our dedication, perseverance and resilience. None are better than the other. All are movement. The ones we enjoy more, we're more likely to stick to which will reap greater health benefits ✨️
There are some caveats for those that perhaps plateau on their health journey. Ross et al. (2015) found that even whilst doing five hours of exercise each week, some individuals won't get much fitter if the type of exercise isn't ideal for their unique make up. This is because our genetics play a role in determining how we respond to aerobic and resistance training. If you don't respond well to one, you are likely to respond to the other (Alvarez-Romero et al., 2021). Several other studies have shown benefits can also be greater for certain groups depending on whether you train in the morning or evening and depending on your natural chronotype. Early risers will benefit from moving more in the morning, while late risers will exercise well and thrive in the evening. If you're feeling stressed or aren't sleeping well, the physical benefits of exercise can be lost as we won't recover well. The complexity when we're feeling stressed is that exercising does act as a stress reliever, so while the physical benefits may be marginal, the mental benefits can be huge (see messages 6, 7, 8, 9 & 11). Bottom line... listen to your body and move in ways that resonate with you.. And see my next point 👉
🌿 ANYTHING is better than nothing. For those with low motivation or busy lives, that might simply mean going for a walk with a friend (see messages 2 ,4 & 7)🚶♂️
