🚨 Spain’s Supermarket Linked to Deforestation Risk in Brazil 🚨 A new analysis by Mighty Earth reveals that meat products on the shelves of Spanish Supermarkets are likely linked to soy-driven deforestation in the Amazon and Cerrado. Almost 4 million tons of soy were imported from Brazil to Spain last year, feeding animals in intensive farming systems. The Spanish ports of Barcelona and Cartagena play a central role in the operations of global grain giants Bunge and Cargill. With less than six months until the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) takes effect, we’re calling on Spanish retailers urgently to help save Brazil’s precious biomes from further destruction. Brazils Cerrado savanna is one of the most biodiverse places on earth, home to 5% of the planet’s animals and plants. A new investigation by Global Witness highlights that beef production by three of the world's biggest meatpackers, JBS, Minerva and Marfrig, has been linked to illegal deforestation across the region. Our partner AidEnvironment's Realtime Deforestation Monitor 16 report from last month highlights 10 cases in the highly threatened Cerrado savannah & Amazon rainforest in Brazil, linked to both cattle & soy supply chains. These cases compound a total of 20,165 hectares of deforestation, 431 fire alerts, & around 2.6 million tons of CO2 emissions. Several cases included are potentially non-compliant with the new EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which entered into force in June 2023. The report gathers cases of visually confirmed deforestation events occurring between June 2022 & August 2023 for which deforestation alerts were detected in August 2023. The ten cases reported are located in the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso, Piauí, Bahia, Maranhão, and Tocantins, & they have been connected, with different levels of certainty, to large soy traders, namely Amaggi, Bunge, and LDC, & large meatpackers, such as JBS and Marfrig. 🐦 Deforestation is on the move 🐦 Or is it? About four years ago we at Other One wrote a blog about deforestation associated with the very same companies and the banks that finance them named in the Global Witness report below. But wasn't the fight against global #deforestation going well? We've got definitive, impactful regulations now…Haven’t we? Sure, but this isn't deforestation guys... Keep up! The #Cerrado, which lies at the southern border of the Amazon at #matogrosso, covers around a fifth of Brazil, hosts 5% of the world's species, and 6,000 types of tree. BUT, being a savannah, it's not fully covered by the #EUDeforestationRegulation. Why not? Acrobatic wordplay about what counts as a forest. The #EUDR has made it illegal for companies to import goods associated with deforestation in the European Union. These companies and banks must have been thrilled to discover that, according to the legislators at the Council of the European Union, a roughly 43% increase in deforestation in the Cerrado area isn't actually deforestation 🤯. Despite 1,193,652 EU citizens calling for a strong EU law to protect global forests, EU citizens wake up today knowing that they are still causing deforestation with their purchases. The planet is all connected. Arbitrary borders or definitions are irrelevant when it comes to emissions and habitat loss. There's no need to overthink it or over-politic it. It's common sense. Let's hope the regulators see common sense and correct this soon...

Once again, measures that threaten to weaken the fight against degradation in the Atlantic Forest are on the horizon. Check out this Trees of Music post following recent news: Just five months ago, the President of Brazil vetoed a provisional measure that would have weakened efforts to combat deforestation in the Atlantic Forest. Now, it falls to the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate to decide whether to uphold or overturn the veto. It is always essential to emphasize the importance of preserving one of Brazil's most threatened biomes. Despite losing more than 93% of its vegetation cover, the Atlantic Forest is still responsible for producing a significant portion of the food consumed in Brazil. According to data from the Agricultural Census by IBGE, the Atlantic Forest is responsible for: 52% of the production of food crops for direct consumption (except for corn, soy, and sugarcane). 30% of the production of non-food plant resources (fibers, latex and cotton). 43% of the production of soy, corn and sugarcane, which are crops used for direct and indirect human consumption (animal feed) and energy. 56% of animal-based food production. 90% of robusta coffee, 90% of black beans, 76% of oats, 68% of table tomatoes, 97% of apples, 63% of eggs, 63% of bananas, 61% of onions, 54% of potatoes, 88% of broccoli and 86% of chayotes. To meet the demand for food, the biome has been subjected to centuries of deforestation, the depletion of its productive capacity and the opening of new areas. Today, the Atlantic Forest is the most devastated biome in the country, with only 12.4% of mature and well-preserved forests remaining. These data serve as a stark reminder that the livelihoods and food security of many people are at stake. 🥩 Brazilians are eating less beef than ever. Is it enough to stop deforestation? The Brazilian Amazon has lost nearly 1 million square kilometres of rainforest in the last three decades, and our appetite for beef is the main culprit. Millions of cattle and thousands of slaughterhouses occupy once-pristine rainforest, and it’s not just cows: the production of soy and corn, two key commodities in feeding the global livestock industry, are also contributing to deforestation, which in turn worsens climate change. But even as Brazilians are eating less beef due to food inflation, global demand for beef is expected to grow, especially in Asia, and environmental protection laws are struggling to stop deforestation.
