There is an urgent need to increase housing stock in Main Street districts, and preservation can be an important tool to help achieve that goal. A new program from HUD will offer grants from $1M to $10M to increase housing growth and low barriers to affordable housing development. Main Streeters can leverage this opportunity in partnership with applicants advocating for the use of preservation tools and incentives to close the gap on project funding and implementation. The fourth and final key strategy outlined in the Tulsa Housing Strategy calls for improved processes and policies to bolster housing development. To achieve this objective, it's essential to advocate for, align and refine policies to eliminate obstacles to housing development across all categories. Crucial components include enhanced communication for housing needs and increased support and resources at the state level. Here are the priority actions aligned with this strategy: ➣ Form a Housing Coalition. ➣ Improve the development review and approval process. ➣ Continue to amend the zoning code to remove barriers for housing. ➣ Create an affordable housing priority program.
