Sometimes, men don’t know what to do to be allies to women in the workplace – but if we show them HOW – it makes a huge difference. As a steadfast ally, you must also actively promote gender equality and advocate for inclusive policies and practices. This could mean advocating for equal pay, calling out instances of gender discrimination or harassment, and promoting diverse hiring and promotion practices plus working hard to create an environment where women feel like they ‘fit’. It's important to remember that being an ally is an ongoing process and requires continuous education and self-reflection. Engage in open and honest conversations with your female colleagues, and be open to feedback and constructive criticism. Want to learn more? My colleague, Molly Hoggard, recently presented on a thought-provoking topic at the Transportation Group New Zealand conference in Nelson, New Zealand. Her presentation challenged transport professionals on the subject of gender equality and provided an excellent argument that it’s an important component that we should be including in the way we view and design our transport systems. The following diagram from her talk is a simple yet powerful way to illustrate how men and women often move around in quite different ways on a typical day.
