Helping you become the top 1% founder by learning from startup failures | 2x founder | 1 exit | Founder @ The Runway Ventures 🚀
🚴🏻 Another bike-sharing company died in Singapore. SG Bike is closing down, and the winner is Anywheel. What happened? SG Bike, founded in August 2017, is Singapore’s homegrown bike-sharing company. In 2019, SG Bike got the approval from Land Transport Authority (LTA) and successfully acquired Mobile’s license to operate a fleet of 25,000 bicycles, making SG Bike the largest bike-sharing company in Singapore. Despite being the largest bike-sharing company in Singapore, SG Bike has been facing challenges over the years. On 21 March 2024, SG Bike had decided not to renew its license and will cease operations on 30 April 2024. So what will happen SG Bike's users? They can convert their existing wallet balance to Anywheel. With SG Bike’s closure, the Singaporean bike-sharing market will now be dominated by Anywheel (30,000 bikes and 1.3 million users) and HelloRide (backed by Alibaba, 10,000 bikes). Will the bike-sharing market eventually consolidate and be dominated by only these 2 bike-sharing players? We’ll see. But one thing is for sure — SG Bike has come to the end of its journey. *** Want to know why SG Bike failed? This Sunday, I'll deep dive into SG Bike's failed story to shares its mistakes and lessons learned. Join 1,100 founders here: https://lnkd.in/gKDxanMK 🤝🏻

Cowboy, a Belgian startup offering advanced connected electric bikes, has unveiled three new live games within its app. Three new in-ride activities, including Race, are a part of an exciting Connect software update that improves the riding experience. Through this action, the e-bike manufacturer is expanding its global users' riding experience and sense of community by entering the social gaming space for the first time. Cowboy's latest games The three games that the e-bike manufacturer released are described as follows: Race: Engage in a 500-meter sprint competition against another rider that has a comparable profile. The initial opponent will be an unknown person with comparable stats, but the challenges get progressively faster with each victory. Burn: Complete a strenuous one-minute challenge to meet a calorie burn objective. To push the rider to the limit, it increases from 4 calories in Level 1 to 23 calories in Level 20. Push: To advance to the next level, demonstrate your strength and stamina by maintaining pedal power over the threshold for a continuous 15 seconds. Although the game seems easy, finishing all 25 stages is a true challenge. Cowboy was established in 2017 by Adrien Roose, Karim Slaoui, and Tanguy Goretti. With its headquarters located in #Brussels, #Belgium, the company has sold over 50,000 bikes and has prevented 8.2 million tonnes of CO2 emissions worldwide. Anyone interested in tech or startups will have heard of the bankruptcy of VanMoof the Dutch brand that pioneered stylish and tech-intensive urban e-bikes. With VanMoof's repair hubs closed, thousands of owners are stuck with nonfunctioning bikes. Which is where Upway comes in. A French marketplace that buys, reconditions and sells used e-bikes — we wrote about them last year — Upway just announced a new service: VanMoof Revive. For EUR 89 or USD 99, Upway will pick up and return a broken VanMoof bike, inspect it and provide a quote for its repair. The estimate only includes costs for parts — bike owners aren't charged for labor. (In the past, Upway's in-house mechanics were trained by VanMoof technicians.) Once someone approves a quote, their bike is repaired and ready for pickup within four weeks. If a bike can't be fixed, Upway will offer to buy it from the owner for spare parts or send it back free of charge. If you’ve ever suffered a flat tire or a broken chain while riding your bike to work, you know that #bicyclecommuting can be an unpredictable mode of transportation. Enter Worth Smith, a Boston-area entrepreneur who is radically changing that paradigm of bicycle ownership. His startup, NEMO, provides mobile, on-demand #bikerepairs for busy people, no matter where are. In my latest profile, I explore with Smith his evolution as an entrepreneur and technologist, his perspective on traditional bike repair and his new subscription-based model that is restoring reliability and #sustainability to bicycle commuting for cyclists of all stripes. #urbanmobility, CoMotion, Boston Cyclists Union, MBTA

Most people view the competition as a battle to be won at all costs. But my experience in the bike share industry, particularly from 2012 to 2019, was very much the opposite. There was a time when the term “bike share” was unfamiliar to most. Now, mention "bike share," and everyone knows what it is. This transformation was the result of an entire industry working together to innovate and grow. Pitching to cities often meant being in the same rooms with competitors, all vying for the same contract. Through these travels and meetings around the world, I befriended many of our competitors. Some folks that immediately come to mind include Lee Jones from Bcycle, Lauren Isaac from her time at Motivate, Sebastian Schlebusch from his time at NextBike, and Kyle Rowe from his time at Spin (see comments for the full list!). Together, we tackled a shared problem from slightly different angles, benefiting cities, communities, and the environment in the process. Competition, in this light, wasn't a hindrance, but a catalyst for collective progress. The bike share boom brought a wave of competitors, each pushing the industry forward, solidifying the category, and amplifying our impact. This competition spurred innovation, forced us to rethink our business models, and approach problems creatively. This is a testament to how competition can be a force for good, fostering better outcomes for everyone involved. It made me a better operator and, more importantly, showed me the value of viewing competitors as collaborators in a shared mission. I'm curious to hear from others. Is this sense of camaraderie in the face of competition unique to the bike share industry, or have you experienced something similar in your field? Are you friends with your competitors, or is that just me? :)
