In recognition of Brain Injury Awareness Month, we’re connecting the dots between brain injury, chronic challenges, & justice system involvement. Brain injury can influence behaviors and legal outcomes, yet this is seldom addressed. This month, we’re raising awareness and pushing for comprehensive support to reshape the narrative and ensure equitable treatment for people with brain injuries. 21-27 August is Brain Injury Awareness Week. Each year in Australia, it aims to raise awareness of brain injury and its impact. This year’s theme is: Brain injury is more than you see, think and feel. Brain injury is a complex disability and affects people differently, including how they think, feel, recover and reintegrate into life. We’ve partnered with Essential Skills Training and Recruitment RTO ID 91729 to develop an Acquired Brain Injury course, which explores acquired brain injury in detail, including the rehabilitation process and support goals. The significance of #rehabilitation in recovery cannot be underestimated.
Jaya F. was in a car accident resulting in a traumatic brain injury and spinal fracture, among other injuries. She arrived at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in a minimally conscious state. “We can’t thank the therapy team enough for all they did. We are proud to be part of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab family,” said Kyle, Jaya’s dad. Watch our video to see how she’s doing today, and learn more about our Amicous program for patients with disorders of consciousness at bit.ly/405H8n6.

Chief Executive at Brainkind | Trustee Catch22 | Trustee VODG (Voluntary Organisations Disability Group)
This is not just a call for funding; it is where joined up thinking and integrated care come together to create better outcomes for individuals and for society. NHS England recently issued two reports; 1. Intermediate care framework for rehabilitation, reablement and recovery following hospital discharge; and 2. A new community rehabilitation and reablement model. The first of these recommends a framework "focused on step-down intermediate care... provided to adults who need support after discharge from acute inpatient settings to help them rehabilitate, re-able and recover". The second states that "A major barrier to delivering step-down intermediate care is a lack of timely access to high quality rehabilitation in the community". Brainkind provide high quality, rehabilitation services in the community. We already work alongside the NHS to deliver these much needed, intermediate services in the community, and help people rehabilitate, re-able and recover. We now need to consider how we work more effectively with NHS England to deliver smoother transition points and "increase capacity, provide easy access to quality, therapy-led rehabilitation, and deliver interventions that are timely, safe and person-centred, for people discharged to intermediate care pathways". So yes, we need a Strategy for Acquired Brain lnjury, and we need funding to support the implementation of that strategy, but we also need to think differently about how services are organised and delivered. #partnershipworking #nhsengland #Brainkind #abi #integratedcare #headway

Even if you know nothing about Brain Injury please take a moment to read this & add your support if you can. More than 350,000 are admitted to hospital in the UK every year with an acquired brain injury. The brain is capable of healing and re-wiring with the righ level of early and intensive rehab. It’s incredible to watch someone regain speech, sight, memory, movement as a result of intense rehab which enables their brain to rewire / reboot / recover. However, funding is so limited & the level of rehab available to most is desperate. I have seem this first hand for the past 15 months. Private medical insurance means v little if you have an acquired brain injury (most policies don’t cover it) and private rehab costs in the region of £12k 😱 a week so is only accessible to the very very wealthy. Unlike so many other areas of healthcare which deals with decline - brain injury rehabilitation results in the opposite. People get better, they regain lost independence, regain the ability to earn a living and regain the opportunity to look after their families - all of which contributes positive to society.

APHASIA (Uh-Fay-Zhuh) is a result of a STROKE or BRAIN INJURY, and affects a person’s ability to communicate. It is important to remember that you are still a competent adult, you know what you want to say, you can make your own decisions and you are not deaf. Aphasia usually comes on suddenly from a stroke or brain injury. But in rare cases it may develop gradually. This is called Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). If you have aphasia, you may find it hard to: TALK, LISTEN/UNDERSTAND OTHERS WHEN THEY SPEAK, READ, WRITE, USE NUMBERS AND DO CALCULATIONS. Our team has experience helping stroke survivors.
