I love nothing more than seeing this type of chart to explain the importance of health and wellness on a micro and macro scale. It starts with the individual and moves its way up the scale to the larger community the individual is part of! If you see yourself anywhere on this scale, what are you doing to make an impact for both yourself and the larger community you are part of? 1) Individual - do you have physical, nutritional, mental, and health goals? 2) Interpersonal - are you engaging with others in your health and wellness goals? 3) Organizational - does your job offer ways to be engaged inside and outside the workspace? If not challenge them to do so! 4) Community - what groups are you a part of? Local community center, gym, recreational organization? 5) Policy - challenge your city, town, or county to provide access to physical activity! Your health matters and is important!
Increasing physical activity as a social norm in communities and raising awareness of the importance of physical activity among community members may encourage more people to seek the services of health and fitness professionals and use community resources (e.g., parks, trails, playgrounds, schools, other recreational facilities) to be more physically active. Individualized and group-based physical activity programming tailored to client and patient needs and preferences can work hand in hand with physical activity policy, systems, and environmental interventions to increase physical activity and help more people improve their health, fitness and quality of life. Some years ago, the SHIP administrator in Flagler County was attempting to educate folks on what a Community Land Trust (CLT) was. It's a way to have land managed by a trust with a 99 year ground lease so that home buyers can pay only for their homes--build some equity, and therefore see long term affordability. Folks always asked why it was needed, since land costs were so low. They aren't right now, and that's why! Infill lots selling for $12,000 just a few years ago are now priced in the $40,000 to $60,000 range today. A Community Land Trust does not have to be one big plat of land that requires significant infrastructure development. It can inlclude various infills. Because the Live Local Act opens surplus lands suitable for affordable housing provisions to CRAs and special districts, some possibilities are opening up for the development of CLTs.
We're working hard to get conference recaps posted - but the learning doesn't stop! Next week, we're presenting some marvelous #LiveLocalAct content at the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA Florida)'s Florida Planning Conference! Hope to see you there! The RJC is excited to announce our inaugural Wales Conference, set to take place in Cardiff on Thursday, 16th May 2024. Join us as we explore the intersection between restorative culture and community transformation and growth. The premise of this conference is rooted in the principle that people possess the abilities to devise their own solutions in the face of difficulties, be it in an educational setting, in their community, at home, or within the justice system. Restorative practice provides values, culture and a reliable structure for relational and trauma informed practice in any context. The different approaches help build, maintain and repair relationships and grow community strengths, to prevent and address conflicts effectively. A restorative approach prioritises inclusion and diversity of perspectives to problem solve well, promoting healing and reconciliation rather than punishment and exclusion. Restorative practice is most effective when implemented as part of a larger restorative culture, where communities are empowered to utilise their own strengths and resources before professional interventions that may have an impact on their lives. When all members of a community are fully committed to fostering a restorative culture, it provides the foundation for transforming conflicts into opportunities for personal and collective learning and success. A community that fully embraces restorative practice has the potential to cultivate a safer, more joyful, and more productive environment for all individuals involved. Central to this is implementing strategies to cultivate a thriving community culture centred on restorative principles. This entails examining ways to assist and enhance the efforts of various organisations that serve and support the community, such as schools, workplaces, criminal justice services, healthcare providers, and local government services, in establishing and integrating their own restorative culture. It is only by accomplishing this that we can establish a suitable environment for empowering communities to embrace restorative practice.
