"Transmission is one of the least recognized parts of our energy system, but also one of the most important." Later this year, the MPSC will be considering around 100 miles of planned transmission buildout in the state, as part of MISO's Long-Range Transmission Plan. Michigan's share of savings from the new lines is estimated at $3.4 billion over 20 years. The lines will also help to reduce congestion, opening up opportunities to bring new sources of clean energy online and ultimately lowering electric bills across the region. Last month, BCSE member Calpine was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to enter into a cost-sharing agreement to build a commercial-scale #carboncapture project that will capture and store 1.75 million metric tons of CO2 each year. This project will help decarbonize California's #energy supply and supports BCSE member SMUD's 2030 Zero Carbon Plan, with a goal of zero emissions in its power supply by 2030. “Calpine has long been a leader in California’s power generation market, having responded to the state’s need for new power generation in the early 2000s,” said Alex Makler, Senior Vice President, West Region of Calpine Corporation. “This project, along with Calpine’s recent battery storage projects and its longstanding #geothermal power production, reaffirms that leadership as California continues to meet its commitment to a zero-carbon future.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dPpTn3ev

In RTO Insider LLC's latest article covering LPPC, Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG), Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA), NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STATE UTILITY CONSUMER ADVOCATES INC, and Electricity Consumers Resource Council's proposal urging Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to integrate cost management protocols in its final rulemaking on regional transmission planning, LPPC President John Di Stasio said the proposed provisions would ensure that transmission projects approved through the regional planning processes undergo “a cost-benefit analysis not just at the outset, but [also] throughout the life of construction, because at the end of the day, consumers are the ones who bear the cost of new infrastructure, and we want to make sure there is oversight on their behalf… Striking a balance between advancing clean energy goals and protecting consumers from unforeseen costs is essential as FERC considers large-scale regional transmission planning.” Read more: https://bit.ly/4c86INy #FERC #Transmission #TransmissionPlanning #GridReliability #CleanEnergy #PublicPower
