🗣 Today, i participated in a panel at The Consumer Goods Forum sustainable retail summit. The Consumer Goods Forum gathers the world’s retailers and consumer goods manufacturers to collaborate. The theme for today was "Addressing Circularity Through the Lens of Food Loss and Waste" 🏆 I shared the panel with Chris Franke (Walmart), Tony McElroy (Tesco), Johannes Bachstädter (ALDI SÜD) - moderated by Kai Robertson. Amazing to see how the focus on food waste has intensified over the last few years! And also to experience how the worlds largest retailers are tackling this enormous problem 👈 One of the repeated statements today was: Food waste reduction is good for margins and great for the planet. We share the this view at REDUCED.

Beverage Industry is embracing a Circular Economy for a Greener Future The beverage industry, like many others, is under increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices that minimize their impact on the environment. As consumers become more aware of the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions, there is a growing demand for sustainable products and processes. This has led many companies across the beverage industry to focus on sustainability as a core part of their business strategy.  One of the ways is by adhering to a circular economy. The adoption of circular economy principles can help create a more sustainable and resilient beverage industry that benefits both the environment and the bottom line.  As we continue to face global challenges such as climate change and resource depletion, the beverage industry and other industries must take a proactive approach toward sustainability. Did you know there was a 2019 study that found meal kits to have a lower carbon footprint than grocery shopping? Research shows that home-delivery meal kits can slash food waste by more than two-thirds. Mindful Chef is a meal kit subscription service that is committed to being as sustainable as possible. Since 2020, they have been a climate-neutral company meaning they are reducing greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible, but it also means compensating for any remaining emissions. Their previous design consisted of insulation pouches combined with gel ice packs which were not easily recycled. The team at Smurfit Kappa developed a 100% recyclable alternative that would survive unpredictable weather conditions and could also be printed in vibrant colours which was ideal to keep in line with Mindful Chef’s strong branding. The three Ps reflect the pillars of Circular Economy Month, whose goal is to demystify all the benefits of a circular economy and highlight the plethora of different business designs that are more than just recycling. The Champion Panel Webinar held on October 24th accomplished just that. Featuring panelists Rachel Morier from The Beer Store, Michael Leering from CSA Group, and Catherine Leighton from TELUS, here are just a few highlights from the discussion: 🧾 Recipes for success, from start-up to nation-wide. Standards have economic benefits of scalability and continual improvement. They take regional examples of circular success and scale them nationally. Committees of experts form these standards, and by doing so, many can learn from past experiences and successes. 📱 An affordable solution for the people, a seamless business case for business. Going in to buy a new device? Consider purchasing a Certified Pre-Owned product (CPO). They work like new, cost 15% less - saving you money! - and have been carefully checked. Did we mention the warranty is still in place? The business providing the refurbishment and verification spends only a third of the cost to repair as compared to the price of a new device. 🍻 Recirculating packaging is very rare in today's marketplace -- but it shouldn't be. The familiar industry-standard brown beer bottles in Ontario are owned by 30 competing brewers. This system, which has been in place for nearly a century and predates regulation, makes business sense due to the proximity of the actors involved (drop off locations aka The Beer Store, end markets, processors, and glass manufacturers). The system also streamlines efficiencies for consumers, incentivizing them to come back and participate.
