I retired in 2017. Conditional promotions were a problem back then. Peeling back the reasons & I did for every senior NCO in our organization, here’s what I found: -NCOs didn’t attend course for a multitude of reasons, (family, sick, injury, weight control, APFT failure, failed prerequisites, etc.) -HRC didn’t manage/schedule conditionally promoted NCOs for priority attendance. -Individual commands didn’t enforce NCOES attendance or correspondence phases prior to physically attendance. -HRC & TRADOC simply did not coordinate/plan for increased courses/seating for those conditionally promoted. Establishing and enforcing timelines and placing “senior NCOs” on notice (via counseling, 4187 requesting short notice attendance, timeline for completion of any correspondence phase) & to be physically ready for attendance at the resident phase in the next 60 days. At the end of the second year, all of our senior NCOs had been to and completed the required level of NCOES for their rank. It was a laborious & frustrating process but well worth the promotions our NCOs kept & their increased readiness, future success/promotions to SFC, MSG/1SG and beyond. Hopefully, that command emphasis/push set the tone for their future development.

Armed Forces have a very matured system... It prepares its talent to shoulder responsibilities... Studies, reading, upskilling and the briefings are part of the learning journey... Armed Forces provides not only in depth specialised knowledge of the parent profession to which one belongs but alos have a horizontal span of trainings whether its #Engineering, #Accounting, #Meteorology, #Aviation, #supplychain #administration #operationsmanagement... Lot of things to study and I remember that had atleast undergone one exam every six months on some or other aspect.... If people believe that there are no studies once you join Armed Forces, then I would suggest that they should prepare their ward for Armed Forces (SSB selection is toughest).... You need a correct #psychologicalstrength, #riskappetite, #attitude , #knowledge, #emotionalintelligence and that's not possible without #learning and #understanding

From Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA) Mike Weimer 👇 "𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆: To meet the Chief of Staff of the Army's intent of eliminating training which is redundant, antiquated, or doesn’t support warfighting and lethality, the U.S. Army has determined it will 𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙭𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝟯𝟰𝟲 𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙊𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙉𝘾𝙊𝙨. An analysis determined these courses were redundant and/or antiquated when assessed against current training requirements and needs. Enlisted courses being eliminated are Distributed Learning Courses (DLC) I–VI (formerly known as Structured Self Development (SSD) I–VI), they account for 253 hours or 31 days. Officer courses being eliminated are the Distance Learning Prerequisite for Commanders Career Course and the Distance Learning Prerequisite for Commanding General Staff Officers Course (P920), these account for 93 hours or 12 days. 164 hours of prerequisite Distance Learning Courses remain and are currently under analysis for potential elimination in the future. People think once you get into the Armed Forces, there’s not much to study. Oh boy! People are in for a huge surprise as they get commissioned and move up the ranks. Army, Navy or Air Force, the studies never stop. This picture below is from Air Force Academy, it’s the Bible for most pilots. They keep going through this and more throughout their career. There are exams every few months to check your readiness and to move onto higher ranks and categories. The army and the navy also have a similar structure. Even now when I meeet my coursemates, most of them are busy studying trying to become instructors or clear a certain exam and most pilots are busy trying to clear their Aircrew Examination Board. You’ll never get onto those high prestigious ranks if your academics part is not sorted. Higher the rank, higher the intellect and understanding of relevant subject matter.

Before you jump to conclusions (see what we did there?), #DYK Ranger Challenge is a great way to break in those new boots and stay in shape? You also might make some new friends and find some grit as you overcome tough physical and mental challenges. We talk an awful lot on here about Ranger Challenges and Sandhurst, but feel like we may have glossed over an educational moment where we could hit you with some knowledge. The U.S. Army Cadet Command (that's us), which encompasses the entire United States, Puerto Rico, and Guam consists of over 1,000 colleges that participate in #ArmyROTC – whether they're a host, extension, or cross-town program. That's a lot. So, for our sanity, the U.S. is broken up in to eight regional brigades. Each of the eight brigades hosts a Ranger Challenge during the school year. This began in partnership with Army ROTC's interest and invitation to compete against the United States Military Academy at West Point at their Sandhurst Military Skills Competition. Ranger Challenges are meant to push teams of nine Cadets to hone their strengths – both physical and mental – and overcome a series of challenges using the training and knowledge they've been working on all year. At the end of each Ranger Challenge, the top two teams are awarded the opportunity to travel to USMA and compete on an international level against the best teams not only in the country, but in the world. It's great to learn...because knowledge is power! So power up those boots and consider giving Ranger Challenge a chance.
