It's not enough to have a strategic location and an excellent workforce if we want to win business. We have to compete. And Illinois is becoming a great competitor. #beinillinois JB Pritzker, Don Harmon, and Emanuel “Chris” Welch have led the policy changes in Springfield. Andy Manar, Claire L., Kristin Richards, Casimir Peters, and Lisa Clemmons Stott have executed the policies beautifully. Business leaders like Leonard P. Singh, Wendell Dallas, Torrence Hinton, Gil C. Quiniones, and Rebecca B. Losli, PE have worked to provide the infrastructure for other companies to grow in Illinois. And civic leaders like the IMA's Mark Denzler, IMEC's David Boulay, P33's Brad Henderson, UIUC's Laura Appenzeller, and so many more make Team Illinois work. We still have a lot of work to do, but we have the right team to win. https://lnkd.in/gHF_zVhS

CEO @ Ameriton Freight & Logistics | Supply Chain Consultant in Transportation Management | Inspirational Speaker
Honoring Black Innovators and Leaders in Transportation I would like to introduce Frederick McKinley “Casey” Jones. Frederick patented the mechanical transport refrigeration unit, which made it possible for long haul trucks and railroad cars to transport fresh and frozen foods around the world. The Inspiration: Jones was inspired to develop this cooling device after a truck driver told him about losing a large shipment of food after the tractor-trailer’s storage compartment overheated during a long-distance trip. The How: Jones made his biggest impact as an inventor, however, through his technological breakthroughs for the improved refrigeration of temperature-sensitive food products being shipped over long distances. He joined entrepreneur Joseph A. “Joe” Numero to form the U.S. Thermo Control Company (later known as Thermo King Corporation) to create systems for ensuring the success of such deliveries. As part of these efforts during the 1940s, Jones developed a means for refrigerating the interior of a long-haul truck’s tractor-trailer and thereby preventing the spoilage of food transported in the vehicle. His final patent was for a thermostat and control system for controlled spaces; according to the specifications for that system, “the invention is concerned with vehicles in which perishable products are transported.” In the time since his death, Jones has continued to be honored for his significant and even life-saving contributions to the transportation of goods across the globe. He was inducted into the Minnesota Inventors Hall of Fame in 1977. In 1991, Jones was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Technology by President George H.W. Bush. Jones was the first African-American to receive this honor. #freight #experience #analytics #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #supplychainsolutions #logisticscompany #logistics #shippers #imports #everythingfreight #smallbusiness #environmentalsustainability #environmentallyfriendly #sustainability #oceanfreight #refrigerated #warehousing #drayage #intermodal #oceanfreight #blackhistory

President & CEO, Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council | Member of CHIEF | Corporate Board Director
Oh what a night!! Michigan’s stars were shining brightly. Several years ago we sought input from diverse constituent groups and benchmarked the Michigan Grammy Awards to ensure our processes were fair, objective and competitive. Each year we nominate our prior year’s ACE winners to compete nationally. Since our awards revamp, we have consistently seen our award winners advance to regional and national awards. In fact, each year Michigan has had multiple national winners. Last night’s NMSDC Annual Awards event was no exception. Congratulations to the Supplier of the Year Regional Winners nominated by MMSDC. Three of the four classes this year were won by Michigan MBEs. The country is divided into four regions and these 2022 Michigan award winners won the 2023 regional awards over thousands of other MBEs in their respective classes. Join me in honoring Class I - Sowell Law Partners Leamon Sowell Class II - Stateline, Class IV - Acro Corporation Ron Shahani. These amazing companies are all winners so it is inspiring to see them and their teams recognized. Special congratulations to Sowell Law Partners for winning the national Class I award. In addition, each year we nominate our award-winning corporate partners in multiple categories. National corporate awards are awarded in five revenue categories. This year’s corporate Class IV winner is Toyota North America and Class V is Ford Motor Company Congratulations to both of these hard-working teams who help their corporations achieve their business goals through inclusion. Both companies are consistently supportive trailblazers of our organization. And last but not least, each year we nominate our Michigan Advocate of the Year for national recognition. This year our top advocate, Travis Spencer also won the national award. Travis is one of the strongest, most results-driven supplier diversity leaders I’ve ever been privileged to work with, so it’s exciting to see him recognized as the top advocate out of leaders in 1,500 national corporations. His quantifiable results speak for themselves. Thank you to our amazing Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council staff and committees for their role in executing our awards processes. It is clearly working as we watch local Michigan winners go on to win regionally and nationally. We are Michigan proud!! #excellenceinequity #mmsdc #minoritybusiness #aceawards #michiganminority Minoritysupplier.org

Today's FreightWaves' transportation moment in Black History goes to Andrew Jackson Beard! 💙 Andrew Jackson Beard, an inventor, made significant contributions to railroad safety with his improvements to the automatic railroad car coupler. 🙌 Born into slavery around 1849 in Eastlake, Alabama, Beard gained his freedom at age 16. After working in various industries, including milling and farming, he ventured into invention. 🤔 In 1881, Beard patented a double plow design, followed by another in 1887, earning substantial profits. He then went into engineering, patenting a rotary steam engine design in 1882. 🚂 Beard's pivotal inventions emerged in the railroad industry. Recognizing the hazards of manual car coupling, Beard patented two improvements to the Janney coupler between 1890 and 1892. 🚃 His inventions facilitated automatic coupling, enhancing safety and efficiency. The innovations, featuring two horizontal jaws that locked upon joining, revolutionized rail operations. 🛤️ In 1897 and 1899, Beard secured patents for his automatic coupler improvements, which became widely adopted in the United States. 🏛️ His advancements coincided with legislative action, as the Federal Safety Appliance Act of 1887 mandated automatic couplers on railroad cars. 👨⚖️ Despite his entrepreneurial success, Beard faced challenges in later life. Limited information exists about his final years, but reports suggest he experienced paralysis and financial hardship. He passed away in 1921, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and safety contributions to the railroad industry. 🖤 In recognition of his pioneering work, Beard was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006. 🥇 PLEASE SHARE! #blackhistorymonth #transportation #logistics #supplychain #blackinventors

Pioneer Service has been an active member of the Valley Industrial Association of Illinois for many years. From advocacy and legislative representation to networking opportunities and training and development programs, our leadership team (and staff across many departments) have found ongoing benefits to the collaboration and partnership we have found with other members in the organization and the staff of the association. Under Kathy Gilmore’s leadership, an amazing board of directors, and an exceptional team of staff members, this is an important organization for any manufacturer to consider. The Valley Industrial Association (#VIA) turns 122 years this year. Amazingly, It was founded in 1902 – when Teddy Roosevelt was President of the US, the radio was first demonstrated publicly, the first movie theatre opened in LA, the first JC Penny store opened in Wyoming, Target Corp is founded, air conditioning was invented in NYC, Richard Daley was born (Chicago mayor 1965-1971) and Ray Kroc was born (ie McDonalds) – to name a few other notable 1902 facts. Its longevity is a testament to the value it provides to its member companies. The original founding members included sixteen manufacturers in the Aurora area. Members today can be found across Northern IL, including Kane, DuPage, Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kendall, and DeKalb counties. Included in the over 200-member list are industrial companies, manufacturing companies, service providers, and suppliers to the industrial ecosystem across this part of IL. So, a shout out to Kathy and her team: Dawn Curran, CFRE (VP Workforce Development), Susan Secondi (Director Operations and Finance) Laura Swarts (Membership Director) and Molly Schiltz (Marketing Coordinator). Thanks for the work you are doing to support manufacturers across the region! #networking #manufacturingIL #Foxvalleybusiness #industrialcompaniesIL #partnership #success2024 #bestpractices #leadership #traininganddevelopment #growthstrategies

Why this fellow made the Glazier Nation Hall of Fame… This school dropout led Pittsburgh Plate Glass to capture 65% of the U.S. Flat Glass Market. Born in Scotland, John Pitcairn Jr traveled with his family at the age of 5 to Pennsylvania. At the age of 14, John left school and his childhood friend, Andrew Carnegie, set him up as a telegraph worker with the Pennsylvania railroad. Both men quickly elevated within the company. Pitcairn invested his extra money into the early Oil Industry and his wealth exploded in the 1870’s. That’s usually what happens when you have social & business contacts like John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Frick & Henry Flagler. There was one way Pitcairn was better than his fellow Titans of Industrialism, he managed to stay out of the public & medias radar. Make no mistake, he was one of the richest businessmen of the Gilded Age but he was known as “The Moral Giant among the Robber Barons.” One day Pitcairn was pitched an idea by John Baptiste Ford, a steam boat operator. Ford’s family started the first American flat glass factory. Pittsburgh had everything needed in one spot to make glass and make a lot of it. Glass is expensive to make because it requires so much heat. Pitcairn controlled a portion fuel pipelines, which made him the perfect investor. He knew the rail business, oil business and he had large amounts of money to invest. Pitcairn and Ford got several other investors together and started PPG in 1883. By 1895, PPG was on Par with Europe’s top flat glass manufacturers. In 1896, a major dispute happened when PPG began to do more than manufacture and sell to distributors. They cut out the distributors and sold direct to glass shops. Ford’s sons claimed they didn’t receive a fair share and Ford sold his part out. Shortly after, John Ford’s son Edward built the biggest glass factory under one roof and capture 20% of the flat glass market share busting up PPG’s stronghold on the US Market. By that time it didn’t matter much anyway, Pitcairn was selling paints, brushes and other chemicals to the same people that would often buy glass. Being a Monopolist, like some of the other capitalist wasn’t his idea. Plus, you can’t have a monopoly against companies like Saint-Gobain. Diversifying was important to him. He was President from 1897-1905 and Chairman of the Board from 1894 until his death in 1916 at the age if 75. An extremely devout Christian, Family Man and Philanthropist, you will have to dig deep to learn about John Pitcairn Jr. He invested in this industry and made residential glass possible for the majority of American Homes. He was not a Tyrant in my book, he was my favorite glass man of all-time. I was super happy when Vitro Architectural Glass bought PPG’s Flat Glass assets. That’s why Vitro will receive Pitcairn’s Hall of Fame Trophy. Come see it at GlassBuild. Ricardo Maiz | Vitro Architectural Glass | Vitro | Andrew Haring | Max Perilstein | Glazier Nation | Ty Clem
