Given the slight increase in optimism towards carbon markets in 2024, it’s perhaps timely to start a few posts on carbon project implementation. I’ve sat in on two meetings already this year where this subject came up and the blank looks around the table were “an eye-opener” to say the least. I’ve done three major forest-based project start-ups in my career, and to be fair, it is not easy. In fact, it is a lot of hard work where experience counts for a great deal. Why is this the case? Well, experience will help considerably with the following list, which are just part of the total requirement: · To accomplish anything, you need people with the right skills and experience to implement. Where will you find these people? How much to pay? What allowances for leave, food, remote location etc. Having someone with industry knowledge and a large network is invaluable to have. · Do you know enough about the roles to create the job descriptions for each position? · Do you know the standards for accommodation, transport, who gets laptops etc? Will the budget available as required? Do you know how to minimize start up costs without compromising programs? · Do you know the legal / regulatory requirements for certified technical staff? · Do you have a plan to coordinate staff facilities with recruitment? · Have you a detailed budget, including recruitment costs for the above? · Do you have a timeline for recruitment according to the impact claims / programs planned? · Do you understand the compulsory certifications required from the Government? · Do you have standard operating procedures for all activities? · Do you have adaptive risk management plans? · Do you know what supporting equipment is required for field teams? · Do you know legal requirements for firefighting equipment and training? · Do you know how to communicate with those in the field? What reporting systems to set up? The list goes on. It is a long one. Of course, some of this was needed in your PDD, and so should be available already? So… Helpful hint #1: Save yourself a lot of time, grief, and money and employ a project manager who understands the requirements already. This person must be prepared to spend a lot of time in the field. Helpful hint #2: that person should be from the forest industry because managing forest assets needs a different approach to mining, manufacturing, or agriculture. It’s impossible to be on top of everything, every minute of the day over such large areas. You must build teams that believe in themselves, without having to check in every five minutes. I’ve not phrased this very well sorry, but hopefully you get the gist. It’s a lot of work that needs a lot of detailed planning if you wish to achieve the project impacts. I know that this is an unpopular statement, but there is so much more to this than sitting in an office looking at satellite images.
