Recent reporting from Higher Ed Dive suggests that many Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) experienced enrollment growth in 2021 and 2022 in the range of 1.2% and 2.4% respectively. Due to lower reporting, the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center finds HBCU final fall 2023 enrollments declined by a total of 3.7%. However, a growth pattern that exceeds other institutions still continues at HBCUs such as North Carolina A&T State University, Howard University, Delaware State University, North Carolina Central University, Wilberforce University, Morgan State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, for example.
Many of the aforementioned institutions have needed to “scale up” their campuses to accommodate the surge of students. Having sufficient housing for students is a core need. At Student Housing of America, Inc. (SHA), we believe that every HBCU student deserves safe, affordable housing. Our mission is to do just that. We partner with HBCUs to renovate distressed properties near campuses to provide modern, safe, and affordable housing for college students through our HBCU Healthy Housing Initiative. Also, as part of our initiative, we provide multiple support programs to promote stable living environments through need-based grants, zero-interest loans, and food security, as well as a pathway to success through informational videos and seminars.
