In a world where gender equality is still a work in progress, it’s crucial to find innovative ways to promote and advocate for girls’ rights. One such initiative is our campaign, “Umpire for Equality” 🏏. This campaign by our organization Shohratgarh Environmental Society (SES) uses the loved indian sport of cricket as a platform to champion girls’ rights, particularly in the Indian context. 🇮🇳 The idea for this campaign was born while watching a cricket match of the Asia Cup recently. I realized the potential of using this sport as a metaphor for equality. I discussed this idea with our team, and everyone was immediately on board. It was clear that cricket could be a powerful medium to bring attention to the cause of girls’ rights. 🙌 In cricket, umpires use various signals to communicate their decisions. Each signal has a specific meaning and is crucial for the smooth conduct of the game. Similarly, in our fight for equality, each one of us can act as an ‘umpire’, using our actions and decisions to signal our stand against gender inequality. ✊ For instance, when an umpire raises both hands above his head, it signals a'six'. In our campaign, this could symbolize the six fundamental rights that every girl should have: the right to live, the right to education, the right to healthcare, the right to protection from discrimination and violence, and the right to participate in social, religious and public activities. The “Umpire for Equality” campaign aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by girls in India and advocate for their rights. The campaign will involve various activities such as cricket matches, interactive sessions with renowned cricketers, workshops on gender equality, and more. 🎉 Today, on October 5th, we are excited to kick off our campaign coinciding with the start of the Cricket World Cup 2023 and International Day of the Girl Child 👧🌍. This campaign not just about the sport but are symbolic of our fight for equality. 💪 The “Umpire for Equality” campaign is about using the power of sport to drive social change on International Day of Girl Child and beyond. Frustrating recent developments in the Bangladesh Women’s Football League (BWFL). Achieving gender equality in football in Bangladesh requires systemic changes. Clubs, federations, and fans must rally behind women’s football, ensuring fair treatment and opportunities. Let’s envision a future where female footballers receive the recognition and compensation they deserve. The future of women's Olympic football is still being determined. It is one of four events where there are not an equal number of teams. There are 16 men's teams and only 12 for women. Apparently, the reason there aren't more is that it is too expensive to pay for another four teams. Other team sports, like basketball and beach volleyball, have an equal number of teams by gender but not football. When are the ruling bodies, FIFA and the IOC, going to realise that the world is 50% women and 50% men and that cost is not an excuse for not supporting gender parity? What do you think? KEY MOMENTS IN CRICKET - CAN DATA BE USED TO IDENTIFY THEM? Moment: from Latin 'momentum' - moving power. Key Moments in Cricket are those instant, seemingly small actions that move the power from one team to the other, in a cricket match. From Aiden Markram's recent catch in the SA20, to that infamous boundary off the horizontal bat of a diving Ben Stokes in the 2019 Cricket World Cup Final; key moments are what fans talk and debate about for days and months to come. My question is: Can merely looking the data, and not the match, identify these key moments; these shifts of momentum? I took a look at the finals of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifier, played on 16th December 2023 between Tanzania and Uganda in Entebbe, to find out exactly that. Here are the key moments I identified through the data analysis (from Tanzania's point of view): 1. 2 run-outs in the same over (Over 15) – Saum Mtae and Neema Pius.  2. Janet Mbabazi’s fierce 2 Overs, in which she got 2 wickets in the 16th over (Hudaa Omary and Perice Zakayo) and 1 run-out in the 15th Over (Saum Mtae).  3. Agnes Qwele’s 4th Over not bowled, leading to Saum Mtae bowling the last over, which went for 13 runs.  4. 2 consecutive overs in which Tanzania lost 2 wickets. The above moments were points where I thought the momentum of the game changed from being in Tanzania's favour to Uganda's. But here's the thing - I can only guess. The data could point towards a wicket that changed the game as a key moment - whereas, someone watching the game would tell you that the key moment was in fact the stunning catch that manufactured the aforementioned wicket. I can sit here and say that it was Janet who changed the game with her run-out, when it might have actually been a silly run-out. The point is, data analysis in cricket can tell us exactly WHERE the game changed, but not always WHAT caused the change or HOW it came about. Only WATCHING the game can tell you that. Sport is meant to be watched. Cricket is a match between 22 players; 22 humans. Merely looking at the data cannot express to you the noise of a 70,000 crowd. It cannot make you feel how a tail-ender would as 9 fielders sledge him when he comes out to bat. It cannot determine the leadership of a great captain as he brings on the 19-year-old to bowl against the seasoned veteran. It cannot do all this - Not yet, at least. https://lnkd.in/dM6nn84U

ICC Bans Transgender Players From International Women's Team To Protect The Integrity Of The Game In a major decision, The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned transgender players from the international women's team if they have gone through male puberty. As per ICC, this decision is based on an extensive scientific review and nine-month consultation to “protect the integrity of the international women’s game and the safety of players. In recent years, rugby union, swimming, cycling, athletics and rugby league have also made such policy decisions citing concerns over fairness or safety. As per this major policy decision, a player who has gone through male puberty will not be eligible for women's internationals regardless of any surgery or treatment undertaken. These new regulations will be reviewed within 2 years. "The changes to the gender eligibility regulations resulted from an extensive consultation process and is founded in science and aligned with the core principles developed during the review," ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice said. Women play a Key role in our society Caregivers and Nurturers: Women often take on primary caregiving responsibilities within families, nurturing and raising children, and providing emotional support to family members.
