In 2010, Cyan Banister took a ride that would change her life and make venture capital history. 🚖 At the time, Uber was a small, little-known startup with a few black cars in San Francisco, far from the global transportation giant it is today. Travis Kalanick, Uber’s co-founder, personally gave Cyan and her husband, Scott, an Uber ride to show them how the service worked. By the end of that ride, she was convinced: this could be a game-changer. Cyan didn’t just take that Uber ride—she invested in the company’s seed round when many investors were skeptical of the idea. In fact, most of Silicon Valley passed on the opportunity. Even Gary Vaynerchuk famously turned Uber down twice. 🚫 But Cyan saw potential where others saw risk. She believed in the vision of transforming transportation through technology, something few understood at the time. Uber was trying to raise $1.25 million, and the Bannisters put their money behind Kalanick and the team, becoming one of Uber's earliest angel investors. Fast forward to Uber’s IPO in 2019, when it went public at an $80 billion valuation, and today, it's worth around $160 billion. Cyan’s small investment turned into one of the most profitable bets in tech history. 🚀 Cyan has since become known for her foresight and ability to support groundbreaking startups when they need it most. Reflecting on that ride, she said, “It was about helping founders solve real problems... and understanding the long-term potential even when it’s not obvious to everyone else.” Her investment in Uber reminds us that sometimes, the key to success in angel investing is not just seeing the current product—but the future it can create. I recently listened to Cyan on Invest Like the Best and honestly, she is a force to be reckoned with and somebody I really look up to in the space. Why Khosla Ventures, 500 Global, Marc Andreessen, and many others are investing in Venture Studios 👇 It’s a rapidly rising asset class and it delivers venture-like returns for non-venture-like risks. There are around 720 venture studios across the globe. These studios create new startups using their own resources. A whitepaper released by GSSN stated that venture studio startups have a greater success rate than those that come out of accelerators or traditional venture-funded companies. Why? Accelerators operate on a 6 to 12-week cadence. Venture studios don’t have set timeframes or limits. They search and pivot until product/market fit is found. They kill most ideas if they can’t find traction and won’t launch a startup if they can’t find evidence that it can be a scalable and profitable company. ❓ Here’s the big question: How much equity/ownership do they take? An accelerator that takes 5% to 10% of a startup’s equity. Venture studios take anywhere from 30% to 80%. 💸💸💸 You’ll need to be a seasoned entrepreneur to reap the benefits of joining a venture studio as you’ll spend less time validating an idea and more time building for its exit. The ability to pause companies when needed, or even merge them, provides the flexibility needed to pivot quickly and efficiently to the realities of the market conditions. Seems like Facebook ads have been replaced by Shark tank Ads in venture capitalists community . Most of Direct of consumer startups are looking to shark tank as a revenue booster by showcasing their products direct to TV and online consumers From a funding show it has already become a Exhibition show as most of the start ups coming in new seasons are already funded by venture capitalists before coming on the show . Most of the companies are coming with 25-100 crores valuation with already raised funding and asking for 50 lacs-1 crore peanuts for 1-2 % equity is not a funding . No surprise if startups would be paying to book their slots in shark Tank . P.S-This is my personal view point and based on assumption
