Huge thank you to everyone who attended this event yesterday, fantastic engagement from brilliant delegates who work in truly challenges environments. Great talk from #BroniaHartley on disclosure in inquests and from the inspirational #DrSunilLad who reminded us that there is still a huge amount of work to do in terms of supporting staff through the inquest process. My key takeaways from Dr Lad’s session; 1. Encourage witnesses and clients to consider post inquest decompression time. 2. Remind witnesses that they should only focus on a snapshot of what they knew at the time. 3. Take steps to reverse the post Covid decline in self care. #healthandjustice #prisons #deathsincustody #Capsticks #inquests

When to challenge, when to concede? Taking a forensic approach, digging deeply into the issues raised and whether they are reasonable or not, will usually reveal the next best steps to take in a regulatory case. Neil Grant describes how, at Gordons Partnership, we work in partnership with our clients to establish how best to respond to the other side in the case. Criminal Analyst @ Homeland Security Investigations | Innovative analysis and a passion for outreach
📺 This is the video to watch and share. ❓Question - 4.4 million views (4/5/2024). Would views be as high on a video called “Financial Scams”? 💬 I have read posts and had conversations about concerns with the term itself. The concern is that it falls under victim blaming- the victim being considered the “pig” in this circumstance. 👂 I get it, and I hear you. In our work, we take a #victimcentered approach. This takes many forms- another post, another day… ❤️🩹 Especially within the #ngo community, you will see the word “victim” scrutinized and a replacement, “survivor” preferred. I get that, too. ‼️ But here is where things stand with “Pig Butchering”: This massive issue has demonstrated that it requires startling language to capture attention. #pigbutchering is not kind, and the damage it does can not be softened by words alone. The opportunity to disrupt this scourge has to be based on aggressive investigation, organizational targeting, seizure, and legal action. 🕵️♀️🚔👩⚖️ 📑 I would love to use a better term that still grabs the attention it needs to be disrupted. 🤔 But… …it is a brutal term because it is precisely how the criminals see the victim. It is the core of the problem. This mindset is the fact that they see victims as someone to manipulate and victimize. 😤 💰 Everyone (especially state and local agencies) struggles to gain resources to deal with this. No one in the fight has the luxury of losing momentum. Even if that momentum comes in a less than flattering form to those we are trying to #protect and #rebuild. ⏳ Maybe, after gaining an edge, items like terminology shifts can move closer to the top. Right now, we need whatever momentum we can get. 💪⏩ #operationshamrock #acams Erin West Jacob Sims Esteban Castaño Matt O’Neill

Lawyer, Leader & Public Safety Executive; SVP of Forensic Services at SoundThinking, Inc.; ATF Associate Deputy Director (Ret.)
True story. Two years ago today, I was so excited about my first day at SoundThinking (formerly ShotSpotter)…that I forgot it was my anniversary! Miracles do happen, and somehow I survived that catastrophic oversight. (That’s not a mistake I’ll make again. Now both anniversaries are conveniently on the same day.) I’ve had two great years at the company. It has been an incredible ‘Chapter 2.’ When I retired from ATF, I’d been a federal employee since I was 19 years old. (I’m quite a bit older than that now!) I loved being a federal agent. From my time in the street, and up through the ranks, I did a lot of cool stuff with tons of awesome people. Along the way, I oversaw thousands of investigations. I managed countless critical incidents. I dealt with every manner of personnel issue. And I learned to navigate politics and bureaucracy. Despite being pretty seasoned by that point, though, stepping into a private-sector, corporate executive position made me feel like an FNG. The culture is different. The acronyms are different. The politics are different. But I have learned a lot in two years. Now undercover operations, tactical training, and firearms qualifications have been replaced with things like corporate governance, trade secrets, and board meetings. Turns out, being a public safety tech exec is a pretty good gig, too. But some things aren’t so different. At SoundThinking, I still read a lot of legal materials and engage with other lawyers. I still interact with law enforcement leaders and the media. I still spend a lot of time talking (both publicly and privately) about using technology to address gun crime. And, best of all, I still do a lot of cool stuff with tons of awesome people!
