I recently attended a Safety, Health & Wellbeing Live North, and wow, I'm feeling inspired! The future of workplace safety is looking brighter than ever with all the amazing innovations I witnessed. But beyond the tools and tech, something really resonated with me – a focus on proactive mental health support for workers. Encountered some incredible vendors: Ripple&Co Provides high quality courses covering positive mental health and wellbeing Vitrue Health Live monitoring apps helping employers create ergonomic havens for their workers. No more backaches and RSI thanks to their data-driven insights and actionable recommendations! Koalys - A SHOEBOX COMPANY : Say goodbye to clunky audiometers! Their web-based solution puts employee hearing health right in their pocket, with instant results and remote monitoring. iHasco This powerhouse offers over 150 high-quality courses covering everything from safety protocols to mental health awareness. Additionally, I was impressed by the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) free online tool. This interactive resource empowers Employers to identify and manage work-related stress and good mental health before it escalates. It's accessible, engaging, and can be a game-changer for workplace wellbeing! This, along with the innovations I saw, gives me immense hope for a future where work environments are not just safe and healthy, but also supportive of mental well-being. What about you? In the same way that you can use a risk-based approach to understand physical safety risks in your workplace, you can identify, assess and develop controls for psychosocial risks. And, much the same as physical safety risks, not all controls are created equal. You may be familiar with the hierarchy of controls, but did you know that with a little adjustment, you can also apply the hierarchy of controls to psychosocial risks? At the bottom is ‘wellbeing PPE’ – think EAP or resilience training: initiatives designed to ‘fix’ or reduce harm to workers who may be exposed to psychosocial hazards. Education-level controls are workplace wellbeing policies, employee resources, or opt-in wellbeing promotion activities. While these have their place, you ideally want to be focusing your efforts further up the pyramid. This is where you start to look at the risk exposures and designing work to be fundamentally healthier. ⭐ This could be designing workflows in a more efficient way to avoid peak periods of high stress and workload. ⭐ This could be designing in more flexible work options and autonomy. ⭐ This could be by building capability in your leaders to lead for wellbeing. I’m not suggesting this is easy work (it’s not!) – but this is where you make the biggest impact. This is where you create work that’s fundamentally sustainable, where people thrive.

With new WHS legislation requiring employers to protect employees from psychological harm, wellbeing education has become more critical than ever. But the benefits of wellbeing education extend far beyond meeting the legal obligations and duty of care to manage psychosocial hazards in the workplace. When staff develop wellbeing literacy, they grow their skills to become better problem solvers, creative thinkers, and they're more patient and compassionate with their colleagues and clients. This results in increased and sustained productivity, boosted morale, better retention, and building your organisation's reputation as an employer of choice. Employee wellbeing is increasingly recognised as a commercial imperative, but have you ever considered the role of psychological safety in promoting wellbeing? Some of the overlaps are highlighted in Tom Geraghty’s latest Psychological Safety newsletter: 1.    A more comfortable work environment: It simply feels better and reduces anxiety when we work somewhere that’s free from interpersonal fear. 2.    Greater access to support: It makes it easier to speak up when we’re struggling, and allows us to access the help and resources we need. 3.    Improved identification of issues: It allows systemic and structural challenges to wellbeing to be identified and addressed. 4.    Avoiding blame culture: It steers us away from “blame and shame” cultures and practices, which can significantly increase stress and anxiety at work. 5.    Fostering innovation: It lets us be more creative and problem solve, which helps us to find more fulfilment and meaning in our work. As Tom writes, “Although they aren’t the same thing, psychological safety and wellbeing are strongly connected, even interdependent. If we can build both, and know that efforts to improve one should also improve the other, we’ll create workplaces where we’re all far more likely to thrive, both personally and professionally.” We know from working with teams across the UK and Europe that After Action Review is an excellent tool for enhancing wellbeing within teams, by creating a safe space for openness and collaborative learning. Would you like to learn about three key strategies for devising a business case for wellbeing in your workplace? Look no further! We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Susanne and Karina from Forth Valley College about their experience working with SuperWellness over the past three years. Karina Buchanan MCIPD is the Wellbeing Human Resources Business Manager, and Susanne Morgan is the Health & Wellbeing Coordinator at the college.
