In 2019, Mercury introduced a City & Guilds accredited safety course to equip our managers and site supervisors with essential skills to manage crews safely and effectively. By Q1 2024, 1033 senior personnel across Europe have completed the training. This unique training was developed for members who are responsible for planning and managing our teams. Since its launch, the course has been a resounding success, contributing to injury rates halving from 2021 to Q1 2024 and receiving high praise from participants. The Mercury SVSM training programme blends theoretical and practical workshops, focusing on health, safety, welfare, environmental issues, and legal responsibilities related to supervision. Topics include: 👷 👷🏾♀️ Empowerment of site supervisors: empowering site supervisors by providing them with essential knowledge and skills to fulfil their critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of all Mercury crews on site. 🥇 Leadership development: emphasising the importance of promoting health and safety through effective leadership, thereby fostering a culture of safety among supervised teams. 📋 Endorsement and standardisation: Endorsed by City & Guilds and Mercury senior management, the programme sets the standard for training all construction supervisors/ forepersons across Mercury sites, ensuring consistency and quality in supervision practices. The unique learning outcomes of this course set us apart in the industry, and we have extended this training to our supply chain to embed "The Mercury Way" across all projects. #WorkSafeHomeSafe

Another way of achieving a positive safety culture in an organisation is to make safety part of a supervisor's or manager's performance appraisal/bonus. I came across a scenario where a safety officer was having a scheduled safety meeting with the employees in the workplace and a manager disrupted the meeting and the meeting was suspended for some days. The reason according to the manager was because he has more pressing work in the workplace and he wanted to meet up with a deadline. Digging deep to why the manager made this decision shows the manager does not understand what safety really is and this cut across the organisation, which is bad to reputation of the organisation. One way to tackle this is to ensure all individual in the management positions to participate in a safety programme such as leadership training that develops or reflects a deeper understanding of safety and health for the organisation and passing an examination on the subject materials covered during the training. To be effective, a bonus or incentives should be attached to it such as being part of the appraisal process. This will change the safety and heath direction of the organisation and raise the importance of a safety culture.

https://lnkd.in/ecbWuB-A Establishing a coaching culture means creating an environment where learning through trying new things is encouraged, mistakes are viewed as opportunities to learn, and building strong relationships among team members is valued. Giving constructive feedback and asking insightful questions are essential elements of this culture that can unleash the potential of individuals and teams, stimulate innovation, and improve overall organizational performance. Imagine,in a construction project, a situation during a routine safety inspection where a safety officer notices a scaffolding technique that could be safer. Instead of criticizing the team of a health and safety manager turns it into a coaching opportunity. They gather the workers involved, discuss what went wrong, and brainstorm together to come up with safer scaffolding methods. This approach builds a coaching culture focused on learning from mistakes and fostering strong relationships. As a result, the construction project sees improvements in safety practices, fewer incidents, and a more collaborative and innovative safety approach overall.#buildingacoachingculture #iosh #theinstituteofleadership #blamingculture

🏗️💡 Building a Strong Safety Culture: Empowering Employees through Quality Health and Safety Training! 🚀🌟 Let's explore a crucial aspect of the construction industry that requires our collective attention: safety culture and employee engagement in safety initiatives. As construction companies strive for excellence, fostering a strong safety culture is not just a box to tick—it's a mindset that permeates every level of the organisation. At the heart of this cultural shift lies the investment in good quality health and safety training. Here's how construction companies can lead the charge in creating a safer workplace while empowering their valued employees: 🧠 Knowledge is Power: Quality health and safety training instills in employees a deep understanding of potential hazards, risk assessment techniques, and the significance of safe practices. With the right knowledge, employees become proactive champions of safety. 🌟 Lead by Example: Safety starts at the top. Company leaders must actively demonstrate their commitment to safety initiatives and participate in relevant training. Active listening and addressing safety issues in a timely manner foster trust and a sense of being valued. 👥 Involve the Team: Engage employees in safety decision-making and planning. When employees have a stake in safety initiatives, they become more invested in the outcomes and feel a sense of ownership. 🎓 Continuous Improvement: Emphasise ongoing health and safety training as part of professional development.
