To celebrate Pride Month in June, Mercury invited celebrated GAA star Dónal Óg Cusack to speak with our team about the power of diversity, inclusion and showing up as your authentic self. 🌈🎉 As a former goalkeeper for the Cork senior hurling team, he has captivated fans with his exceptional skills, dedication, and leadership. His legacy in GAA is one of excellence and inspiration. Donal Óg’s talents and achievements extend far beyond the pitch. He is also an accomplished engineering manager, demonstrating the same passion and precision in his professional career as he does in sports. An advocate for the LGBTQ community, Donal Óg became one of the first openly gay elite Irish sportsman when he came out in 2009, breaking perceptions around men in sport. This open, honest, and inspiring conversation explored the intersections of his careers in sport and engineering. An interactive Q&A session gave our team members the opportunity to ask specific questions, providing further insight into his journey on and off the pitch. “There’s a great power in being true to who you are. You’ll find most people are good people and will have your back and want to see you succeed no matter what.” Dónal Óg’s story is a powerful reminder of the power of authenticity and resilience. We’d like to thank him for speaking so openly, and providing an opportunity for reflection, helping us understand the importance of embracing diversity and different perspectives in our industry.

5 years ago we wrote an EGM blog about Siya Kolisi from South African Rugby Union (SA Rugby). Kolisi made history as “the first black captain of the Springboks in a country where, because of apartheid and separate development, the professional sport was once an “all-white” affair” (TheConversation.com 1/10/23) Now after guiding Bokke to semi final victory over England (and breaking a few of the EGM teams hearts on the process) he’s got the chance to lead his country to their 2nd RWC 🏆(back to back). Revisiting the blog post is timely in Australia: - Highlighting a McKinsey & Company study that found a significant relationship between ethnically diverse leadership and work teams and increased financial performance. - Companies in the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity were 35 percent more likely to have financial returns above their respective national industry medians. - McKinsey’s findings indicate that the correlation between ethnic diversity and profitability are even higher than that between gender diversity and profitability. We wrote in 2018 that “sadly, it looks like Australian organisations haven’t read the Mckinsey study... A report released by Australia’s Race Discrimination Commissioner in May 2018, ‘Leading for Change’, found a staggering 75.9% of senior leaders in Australian business are from an Anglo-Celtic background, with just 4.7% from a non-European background and only 0.4% from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background.” Worth thinking about how far we have come (or not) in 5 years… Anyway. Congratulations to the Springboks and Kolisi. Best of luck to South Africa and New Zealand Rugby in the Final. 👏 https://lnkd.in/g6ehQhUX

ICC Bans Transgender Players From International Women's Team To Protect The Integrity Of The Game In a major decision, The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned transgender players from the international women's team if they have gone through male puberty. As per ICC, this decision is based on an extensive scientific review and nine-month consultation to “protect the integrity of the international women’s game and the safety of players. In recent years, rugby union, swimming, cycling, athletics and rugby league have also made such policy decisions citing concerns over fairness or safety. As per this major policy decision, a player who has gone through male puberty will not be eligible for women's internationals regardless of any surgery or treatment undertaken. These new regulations will be reviewed within 2 years. "The changes to the gender eligibility regulations resulted from an extensive consultation process and is founded in science and aligned with the core principles developed during the review," ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice said. He added, "Inclusivity is incredibly important to us as a sport, but our priority was to protect the integrity of the international women's game and the safety of players." . . . . . . . #icc #internationalcricketcouncil #transgender #inclusion #diversityandinclusion #DEI #diversityinsports #diversityinclusion #diversitymatters #womenplayers #womencricketers #womancricketer #womenempowerment #transwoman #transgenderwoman #transgenderrights #womeninsports #sportswoman #discrimination #hiringbias #bnblegal #legalnews #lawnews #internationalsports #internationalcricket #cricket #cricketworldcup #womencricketteam #cricketteam #unfair

I am honored to have shared my insights on the importance of female representation in sports coaching in a recent interview with the CEV. Reflecting on the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where only 13% of the coaching staff were women, it is evident that we have a long way to go in achieving gender equality in sports leadership. As the first female professional beach volleyball player from Austria and a top 10 world-ranked athlete, I have seen firsthand the impact of having diverse perspectives within a team. Women naturally bring a more holistic approach to coaching, focusing on effective communication and fostering a supportive team environment. This approach not only benefits female athletes but also enhances the performance and cohesion of male athletes. In my current role as a mentor for the Austrian national beach volleyball teams, I have been able to bridge communication gaps and foster team spirit. It is crucial that we recognize and promote the value of female coaches. Implementing female staff is a forward-thinking move. International organizations should think about supporting and empowering female coaches, similar to the programs available for referees and transitioning athletes. By raising awareness and providing opportunities, we can ensure that more women bring their unique skills to the table, ultimately benefiting the entire sports community. I invite you to read the full article to learn more about this important issue: https://lnkd.in/eWyqhVAt #LeadershipInSports #WomenInCoaching #DiversityAndInclusion #BeachVolleyball #Mentorship #HolisticCoaching

The 2023 Sporting Equals Race Representation Index (RRI) has been published and we’re pleased to share the progress that England Netball is making. The survey is a crucial baseline barometer, evaluating publicly funded NGBs of sport on their advancements in the race equality agenda, specifically focusing on ethnic diversity and representation. Out of the 58 NGBs that responded, only 12%, including England Netball, scored A or B. England Netball has moved from a C to a B grade overall – with A grades recorded for Board, coaches and athletes – and are sixth out of 58 sports in the final index. You can click below to see the full report, with a breakdown of our scores and comparisons to other sports. While there is still more work to be done, this index provides a good foundation to build on moving forwards. England Netball is committed to ensuring netball is an inclusive sport and improving diversity at all levels. Driven by insight, we’re working collectively across the organisation to develop and deliver our Dedicated 2 Difference Action Plan which will help us drive an anti-racist culture through an equitable approach. Recently, our Regional ED&I Leads joined one of our regular Regional Chairs meetings for the first time (photo from the day below). It was fantastic to have everyone together in one room to spend the day discussing our ambitions as well as sharing best practice, and establishing how we can collectively develop knowledge, build confidence and be fearless leaders to make the change in sport.
