In alignment with the UNSDG – Life on Land, Mercury works with a number of organisations across Europe involved in projects that strive to preserve and restore biodiversity. 🌍💚 In Germany, we have partnered with NABU e.V. an organisation which focuses on the restoration of rivers, by reactivating flood channels, dismantling levees and planting alluvial forests, enabling the river to regain its natural flow and become a habitat again for endangered species such as the Lapwing bird. These important preservation efforts help protect against extreme flooding and form a buffer for times of low precipitation. Additionally, the alluvial forest helps sequester carbon emissions. This is our second year of partnership with NABU. Our donation of €12,000 will go to the organisations’ Flussfonds initiative, allowing preparation of the land, planting and securing of trees and providing initial care at the Lower Havel, a wetland of international importance located near Berlin. Our ongoing commitment to organisations like NABU helps ensure these vital ecosystems are protected and helps us continue in our promise to create a more sustainable world around us. #OurPlanetOurDuty

Last week we attended #redlac2023 with more than 350 participants from 35 countries to discuss environmental finance for biodiversity and climate change. We were there to learn, share, and connect - and are very grateful to the organizers for the opportunity to host a side event focused on the role of Conservation Trust Funds in Project Finance for Permanence (PFP). We were joined by leaders from Forever Costa Rica Association, Funbio - Fundo Brasileiro para a Biodiversidade, Fondo Patrimonio Natural, and Patrimonio Natural del Perú who shared their experience planning and implementing PFPs. It was an interactive and engaging discussion, and we appreciate all those that helped plan, participate, and lead the conversations. We are also grateful for the time to connect with so many key partners who are driving this work forward - including RedLAC, Global Environment Facility, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Funbio - Fundo Brasileiro para a Biodiversidade, Profonanpe, Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature, Forever Costa Rica Association, World Wildlife Fund, The Pew Charitable Trusts, The Nature Conservancy, ZOMALAB, Amazon Sustainable Landscapes, Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, Mesoamerican Reef Fund, Fundesnap, SERNANP, Bezos Earth Fund, Fondo Acción, BIOFIN - Biodiversity Finance Initiative, and many more. Happy United Nations Day! 🌐 Today, we celebrate the power of unity and collaboration to create a better world. 🤝 As well as judging our projects by their UN Sustainable Development Goal co-benefits, Ecologi is also an actor in the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. In collaboration with around 100 organisations, charities, and agencies worldwide, we're dedicated to accelerating ecosystem restoration efforts for the benefit of both people and nature. 📣 The UN Decade is a global call to protect and revive ecosystems. It's a vital mission to bring life back to areas damaged by human activity and create a sustainable future. Through Ecologi, you can support projects that restore and protect ecosystems, like our Temperate Forest Restoration in Kenya, Lowland Peat Forest in Indonesia, and Avoided Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest. Every small action counts, and together we can restore ecosystems. 🌎 Find out more in our blog (link in comments). #ForOurPlanet #UNDay #EcosystemRestoration #UNDecade #ClimateAction #Sustainability

🌊 You shop, we donate, with a minimum promise of 24,000€ to the John Nurminen Foundation and its health and heritage work to save the Baltic Sea. The #balticsea is the world's youngest sea, having been formed between 10-15k years ago from glacial erosion, but today its unique and fragile ecosystems are under threat. Human activities related to farming, transport, fishing and tourism continue to fuel its biggest problem 🌿 #eutrophication, or harmful plant and algae blooms which affect up to 97% of the Baltic Sea. Since 1992, the John Nurminen Foundation has launched 43 marine environment projects, of which 34 have been completed, including a 75% reduction in the phosphorus load of the Gulf of Finland. That's why we will donate 2 cents to the Foundation's work for every Kiilto, Erisan, Serto, or Linna consumer product sold between 01 August and 30 September, 2023. It's never too late to make a difference. 👇 Read more https://lnkd.in/d6k_BZ2h

Last Thursday was the 2024 Sapphire Dinner, which has the aim of protecting oceans and financially supporting organisations making an impact in ocean protection and conservation. Less than 2% of all philanthropic giving is directed toward the environment, and even less for ocean conservation. The Sapphire Project are changing that - over the past 3 years they have raised and distributed over $3 million, going directly into safeguarding marine ecosystems and the many lives that depend on it. The 2024 Sapphire Dinner at Art Gallery NSW raised over $1.6 million to support ocean organisations like Great Barrier Reef Foundation, One Tree Island Research Station, Lizard Island Research Station, Australian Sea Lion Recovery Foundation, and Biopix Oceans Foundation. Here are some facts about the ocean: - Only around 2.9% of the ocean is fully or highly protected; - The ocean is home to 94% of the entire planet’s species; - Coral reefs are the most vulnerable ecosystems on the planet; - On the Great Barrier Reef, every part of the reef system has now bleached at least once since 1998. The Great Barrier Reef Foundation is: - Deploying 10 million heat tolerant corals annually across 100 priority reefs on the Great Barrier Reef; - Introducing Coral IVF on the Reef and have used it to grow and settle millions of baby corals since 2016; - Planting heat tolerant corals across one-third of Pacific coral reefs, in partnership with local reef managers and communities; - Empowering frontline communities across the Pacific and beyond with Reef-saving strategies and technologies. The Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) called on the German Ambassador to Jamaica Jan Hendrik van Thiel on Friday, June 28 to discuss the significant contributions of Germany in the sustainable development of the Caribbean region particularly via the CBF. Karen McDonald Gayle, CEO of the CBF highlighted the German Government’s involvement as a founding member of the organization which started in 2012 with USD 53 million through the German Development Bank (KfW) to the CBF Endowment Fund. Since then, that endowment fund has grown to over USD 100 million and benefits 12 Caribbean countries through disbursements to partner National Conservation Trust Funds (NCTFs) that protect and conserve biodiversity in their respective countries. As the CBF works to ensure continuous funding for conservation and sustainable development in the Caribbean, it has disbursed over USD 27 million to 105 projects in 14 countries that support coral and mangrove restoration, climate resilience and biodiversity conservation. Working towards a vision of a Caribbean region where both its people and natural environment thrive, more strategic partnerships such as the one shared with the CBF and Germany are needed to protect the natural treasures that make the Caribbean unique and valuable.
