With the new Mercedes-AMG E53 HYBRID 4MATIC as a saloon and estate, the performance and sports car brand from Affalterbach is presenting two further plug-in hybrid models. They combine outstanding performance and driving dynamics with a long electric range. The combination of the 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine and the permanently excited E-synchronous machine generates a maximum system output of 430 kW (585 HP) [at RACE START: 450 kW/612 HP] and a maximum system torque of 750 Nm. The performance is correspondingly dynamic: acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes place in 3.8 seconds (saloon with RACE START, part of the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package). The top speed is electronically limited to 280 km/h (saloon with optional AMG Driver’s Package). Up to 140 km/h are possible purely electrically. The 120-kW electric motor is integrated into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission to save space. The high-power density of the hybrid power unit is achieved by the permanently excited internal rotor synchronous technology. The electric motor’s maximum torque of 480 Nm is available from the first revolution and ensures high agility even when starting off. The traction battery with 400 volts has a gross capacity of 28.6 kWh and is installed in the rear under the trunk floor. The energy content that can be used every day is smaller at 21.22 kWh, as part of the energy is always reserved for boosting and thus high-performance driving. Fleet Procure Ltd LIVE! was a brilliant event for us at QV Systems: meeting our customers, hearing positive feedback on the new UI, meeting prospects and industry colleagues to discuss the hot topics of the moment. But as well as that, I drove some product! It was a real privilege to be on the Millbrook proving ground I've read so much about over the years. I kept a few notes on each car... BMW i5 Saloon Big, quiet, fast, refined, great infotainment platform. Heated steering wheel was a new experience for me, but I can't think it too vital in the UK - perhaps in a convertible? From a packaging perspective the transmission tunnel was a disappointment, showed the compromises of combining an ICE and EV platform. 7/10 BMW M4 Competition Looked amazing, great sense of occasion. Very fast and loud, but the suspension was way too hard for my tastes and after driving EV, the (lack of) throttle response was a real downside. For a "sporty" car, the sheer size of the thing and high bonnetline felt incongruous. 6/10 Kia EV9 Massive. It would be quite possible to live inside it for short periods of time. Very clever six seat swivelling-chairs, the middle row can face backwards while in motion too due to integrated seatbelts. Fast, smooth, infotainment wasn't quite top of the tree. 8/10 Volvo EX30 Not massive. Divisive interior: I loved it, my passenger hated it. Very "meh" to drive: light steering, strange throttle programming, quite rolly in the bends. Would be a perfect city/town car. The fact that there is a version that does 0-60 in 3.6 seconds is amusing and terrifying in equal measure. 6/10 Porsche 911 GTS Absolutely beautifully built. Truly wonderful to drive, with steering that managed to be both delicate and feelsome at the same time. Very, very fast indeed and the tyre roar problem of the last few 911s I have been a passenger in seemed to have been solved. I want one, but one where the roof comes off. 9/10

Mercedes AMG S 63 E Performance review: Absolute Power https://ift.tt/6KD52ga Hanging onto the steering wheel for dear life while mumbling expletives is not what you imagine when you think of driving an S-Class. However, when it wears a ‘63’ badge, things are slightly different. More so when that badge gets red highlights, because that means the S-Class in question isn’t the usual, sophisticated, good boy, but its evil cousin. The Mercedes-AMG S 63 E-Performance is an 802hp limousine that is ready to rip a hole through time, and as its name suggests, it’s all about the performance. For once, the back seat takes a back seat in an S-Class.  Mercedes-AMG S 63 powertrain and performance The S 63 is a plug-in hybrid gone rogue. It gets a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, putting out 612hp and 900Nm, but then a 13kWh battery and electric motor on the rear axle put out an additional 190hp and 320Nm, bringing the total output to a hysterical 802hp and 1,430Nm. Deploying 1,430Nm of torque to the tarmac is like putting Usain Bolt on your home treadmill. There is so much grip that it feels like the car is trying to stretch the road beneath it every time you put your foot down. As a result, despite its 2.5-tonne heft, it can go from 0 to 100kph in just 3.4 seconds. The top speed is limited to 250kph, but if you opt for the Driver’s Pack, you can remove the limiter and get it up to 290kph. Clearly, range is not the priority for this hybrid.  Beneath the skin lies some groundbreaking F1-inspired tech. The numbers on the S 63 are intimidating, to say the least, and the experience from behind the wheel is, too. The car picks up the pace with zero lag, and you need to keep an eye on the speed readout; otherwise, it’s just a blur as you accelerate.  What helps bring this earth-shattering performance to the road are two transmissions. The engine uses a speedshift 9-speed MCT, and the motor gets its own 2-speed transmission, because it spins at a different RPM from the engine. First gear on the motor is good enough for up to 140kph and only after that does it switch to second for a smoother torque transition.  It will make you grin each time you find an empty stretch of road. What you’ll be using most is the 9-speed with its paddle shifters. Needless to say, it is extremely responsive, and in Sport and Sport , it’s extremely aggressive as well. When you push the car hard, shifts are immediate, and for total control, you can switch to ‘M’ or manual mode, where it will not upshift unless you tug at the right paddle. However, for everyday driving in the city, it isn’t the smoothest. There are noticeable jerks at low speeds, and even in Comfort mode, you’re constantly made aware of the massive power waiting to be unleashed. Then there is the exhaust, which, sadly, isn’t all-natural. A lot of it is fed through the speakers, and for the most part, you’ll barely hear it outside. Rev it high enough, though, and the V8 roar is very much there, along with pops and bangs ...

Mercedes C 300 review: Quickest non-AMG C-Class https://ift.tt/A4K3pRo Out goes the C 300 d and in comes the C 300. In simple English, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class loses the performance-oriented version of the OM654 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, and in its place, there’s the option of a new performance-oriented version of the M254 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. The latter is not to be confused with the AMG C 43’s highly strung M139 engine, mind you. Mercedes says the move from C 300 d to C 300 is in keeping with a broader market move away from diesels. The C 220 d diesel remains in the line-up, as does the C 200, which is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine. So, what do we have here? Peak power is 258hp while torque is 400Nm, both figures down on the strong-hearted C 300 d’s 265hp and 550Nm. But that’s on paper. On the go, the C 300 petrol is quick to win you over. It feels strong from the get-go and there’s a delightful long-leggedness to the performance. Pressing down on the accelerator reveals an engine with lots to give, highlighted by the sustained pull well upwards of 100kph. The engine revs happily past 6,000rpm, too, and sounds rather nice, while at it. No, there’s no sport exhaust and you don’t get the pops and bangs of a full-blown AMG, but a Sport setting for the exhaust does up the decibel levels (it’s still not loud) to make the C 300 sound purposeful. The 9-speed gearbox is well in tune with the proceedings and delivers quick shifts when you expect them. Or better still, you can use the paddle shifters to take matters into your own hands.  Slick handling adds to the fun factor. Cabin’s ambience is fantastic. The slick powertrain is complemented by a well-judged ride and handling balance. The suspension setup is clearly biased towards comfort and there is some roll in the corners, but body control, even in high-speed corners, is good. Helping the feeling of connect is the steering. It might be an electric power steering, but it feels well-oiled like an old-school hydraulic unit. Good grip, strong brakes and the rear-wheel-drive layout help work out a delightful rhythm with the car. For most buyers, frankly, the C 300 offers all the performance and thrills they could use. The other thing? The C 300 doesn’t forget it’s a Mercedes and will also be tasked with ferrying occupants in great comfort. There’s a new-found suppleness to the ride at low speeds, thanks to tweaks to the suspension and even those 18-inch rims don’t compromise comfort. Thankfully, Mercedes has also addressed the older C 300 d’s ground clearance issue. Revisions to the underbody have made belly scrapes on speedbreakers a rarity rather than the norm, and this alone makes the C 300 easier to live with. Since we are comparing the two, of course, the petrol is quieter and smoother at all times – the diesel used to boom when revved.  AMG Line body work and wheels lend it a sporty look. Now this is what we've all (well some of us) have been waiting for - a decent sized electric estate car. People of a certain age (a group that I definitely fall into) like taking stuff to the tip and nothing beats a proper estate car Many of us have been forced into large electric SUVs which are fine but not very efficient (ICE or EV) and we'd much prefer to be in something like this No offense to MG Motor AE but the MG5, which is a great car and you get a lot for your money, doesn't have the required boot space or range. The only other electric estate option is the recently launched BMW Group i5 tourer which is in a completely different price bracket to the ID.7 It's also just an ICE conversion and not designed as an EV and so you get a drive train tunnel which seriously restricts the leg room for the middle seat in the back and has less boot space than the ID.7 (570 litres vs 605 litres seats up) As with the Saloon / Fastback it will come with two batteries - the, now standard VWG, 77kWh (useable) and the larger 86kWh for the Pro S. Mazda fans rejoice, because the all-new CX70 will appear for the first time in the United States on January 30th, and it will, God willing, be the newest Mazda car of 2024. There is no shortage of competitors within the CX70 model class, ranging from stylish and practical options like the Kia Sorento to luxurious and elegant options like the BMW X3, and the newest 2024 Mazda cars are likely to be strong in competition. While Mazda has yet to confirm engine options, it has filed paperwork with the California Air Resources Board (CARB), which effectively leaked the powertrain options ahead of launch. As we expected, the CX70 will be equipped with the same engines as the CX90, with which it shares a platform. Mazda engines that will be available on the CX70 A 2.5-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor within the Plug-in Hybrid system, together producing 323 horsepower. A 3.3 liter inline 6-cylinder turbo engine with a small electric motor within the plug-in hybrid system, producing 340 horsepower from the two engines working together. Rumor has it that the CX70 will be a wide-body version of the CX60, hopefully with more aggressive styling.
