Disability Pride Month began in July of 1990 after the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) was passed. This prohibited discrimination against disabled Americans. The purpose of the Pride aspect can be defined like this: “To change the way people think about and define “disability,” to break down and end the internalized shame among people with Disabilities, and to promote the belief in society that Disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disabilities can take pride. (Chicago’s Disability Pride Parade, 2013)” There are many ways to support Disability Pride, and one is by sharing the Disability Pride flag, shown below! July is Disability Pride Month! On July 26, 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law. Today, according to the ADA National Network, there are 54 million Americans living with a disability.
