July is Disability Pride Month, a time to celebrate the work of disability rights organizers, elevate disabled voices, and reflect on how much ableism (discrimination in favor of able-bodied people) is still left to combat in our governments, medical system, and interpersonal relationships more broadly. Above all else, it’s a time for non-disabled people to listen.
The month of July was chosen due to the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990, a piece of legislature we at STV are all familiar with across our industries as we help our clients design, manufacture, and build systems that are accessible to everyone regardless of their abilities. The ADA would not have been passed without the tireless effort of disabled activists who led a public campaign to force government officials to pay attention to the basic rights of disabled people in the months and years leading up to the law.
However, the work for Disability Inclusion does not end with the ADA, and more work still needs to be done from the Government, companies, and us as individuals to champion disability rights and inclusion. I encourage everyone to research and self-reflect on ways they can be a better ally to disabled people this month.
#DisabilityPride Month occurs every July to honor the achievements and struggles of the disabled community and to commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, signed 33 years ago today.
STV has a proud history of working on various projects to make communities more accessible, such as our work with Denver International Airport - City & County of Denver Dept of Aviation, El Paso County and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
