This essential neonatal care practice involves continuous skin-to-skin contact, exclusive breastfeeding, and timely discharge from the NICU. It’s a low-cost, high-outcome intervention that significantly improves health outcomes for newborns and supports families globally. Key benefits of KMC include: - reducing infant mortality and infections - improving growth, brain development, and long-term outcomes - strengthening bonding and reducing stress for infants and parents - lowering hospital costs and easing the workload for healthcare professionals Despite these benefits, some hospitals are unjustly charging families for KMC. We are publishing a statement on 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙆𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙤 𝙈𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙚 (𝙆𝙈𝘾), a neonatal care practice that is not just beneficial but essential for preterm and sick newborns. KMC involves continuous skin-to-skin contact, exclusive breastfeeding, and timely discharge from the NICU. 𝙄𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩, 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙚, and we strongly oppose any practices where families are charged for this care. KMC offers 𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝙗𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙨: - reduced mortality and infections - stabilised heart rates and improved brain development - improved long-term social and behavioural outcomes - strengthened bonding and reduced stress for both infants and parents Moreover, 𝙆𝙈𝘾 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙨 by reducing the workload on medical staff, lowering hospital costs, and requiring less expensive equipment. Today we recognize Maternal Health Awareness Day by highlighting NICHD’s long-standing commitment to and history of leading research on maternal and postpartum health. “The magnitude and persistence of maternal health disparities in the United States underscore the need for research to identify evidence-based solutions to promote health equity and improve outcomes nationwide,” said Dr. Diana W. Bianchi, NICHD Director.   In August 2023, NIH established the Maternal Health Research Centers of Excellence to generate critical scientific evidence that helps guide clinical care and reduce health disparities during and after pregnancy. 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭- 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲-𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞: Interdisciplinary neonatal palliative care focuses on the quality of life for both the infant and the family. All relevant medical information, prognosis, and care choices should be shared, respecting family values and rights. 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Overcoming barriers related to language, education, culture, and socio-economic status with clear and compassionate communication is essential. The European Standards of Care for Newborn Health (ESCNH) provide comprehensive guidelines to help healthcare professionals deliver optimal care from the hospital to school age. Improving quality of care in healthcare facilities is essential in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. Yesterday, we shared Ouagadougou Urban City Study findings on Maternal & New-born Health with representatives from the Ministry of Health, health facilities, and the community among others. The study aimed at assessing the quality of maternal and newborn health services available to the City's women, and to evaluate their experience & satisfaction of care when accessing health services. This study shows that there is a major gap in the quality of care available to women living in Ouagadougou’s slum areas. This gap concerns both the operational capacity of maternal and neonatal health services and women’s positive experiences of childbirth care. The study recommends the Ministry of Health, to among others: initiate and accelerate the implementation of the patient-centered care approach in maternal and neonatal health services.
