I had a blast discussing "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐈 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚" at last week's FinTech Summit Africa. Here are some key takeaways from my fellow panellists: 🌟 Esther Munyi talked about the importance of inclusivity and tackling meaningful problems. She also made a great point about designing data privacy upfront, not as an afterthought. 💡 Dirk le Roux reminded us that AI is just a tool, and it's up to us humans to make it powerful. He also shared some insights from SprintHive about the importance of data quality in training ID verification systems. 💎 Revon Singh highlighted the disparities in AI adoption across Africa due to varying levels of infrastructure, talent, funding, and business opportunities. My favourite takeaway from him was how he reframes risks as opportunities and puts guardrails to ensure innovation is celebrated, not stifled. And a special shoutout to Akhona C. Bashe. I have been on a fair share of panels, and she is for sure the most well-prepared and smooth moderator 🤗 🎈 Here are some thoughts I shared during the panel: It’s hard to grasp the potential of a constantly evolving technology fully. When Gen AI first emerged, it was all about generating gimmicky content like cats as astronauts. Last year, it became a powerful productivity tool for many companies, and 2024 is dubbed the year of AI Agents. The Financial Services Industry has always been a leader in AI/ML adoption because of the vast amount of data available. FinTech, in particular, shows the fastest uptake in Gen AI. Automated document verification, fraud detection, product personalisation, and other AI use cases are becoming more efficient and quicker to implement. The real excitement about this technology comes from how it shortens the development lifecycle for many AI initiatives. A few years ago, building a receipt recognition system could take years and still fail due to low accuracy. Today, similar tasks can be prototyped and deployed in a few weeks using advanced vision-based models. Africa has its unique challenges, like low-resource languages and a lack of infrastructure, but we’re making progress. I initially worried that the digital divide would worsen with new technology. However, I’ve seen a lot of research and funding directed towards preserving African languages and bridging this divide. Many startups are tirelessly working towards this goal. These efforts will transform how we communicate and interact with each other. As a first-generation immigrant, I dream of the day when a real-time Universal Translator can close language barriers and create meaningful relationships for people from different backgrounds. 😊 Thanks to everyone involved for such a thought-provoking session!
