This is an unfortunate reality for too many kids across the country. Our client Seattle Children's is on the frontline. Unfortunately, 2022 was a record breaking year for mental and behavioral health services, and not in a good way. A theme was unnecessary, lengthy hospitalizations due to lack of community resources. In fact, a third or more of the beds in their ED were regularly filled with children "boarding" awaiting appropriate care last year. The children’s mental health crisis is on-going, and children’s hospitals are often the last resort for parents and caregivers who cannot access emergency mental health care services for their children and teens. To better understand this crisis and what’s happening in children’s hospitals across the nation, The Wall Street Journal spoke to Texas Children's Hospital, Cook Children's Health Care System, Cincinnati Children's, Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida, OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and others to highlight the boarding crisis and challenges our ED doctors face while trying to keep these children safe.
