I asked Anthony Fernando, the CEO of Asensus Surgical at the recent #SRS2024. Society of Robotic Surgery | SRS. Do we really need another large format surgical robot in the healthcare system? Is another robot the answer? What value is beyond the robot? In the most basic sense, aren’t the centers of data collection (video, imaging, advisement, and AR) perhaps just as valuable, if not more, than the surgical robotic system that in the most basic sense responds to “Here is what we know, now go and do it” ? What drives the acquisition of information that leads to knowledge, shortening training cycles, driving consistency, and advisement based on real-time actionable “right now” data? Worthy of a discussion.

CEO at Virtuoso Surgical, Inc. Professor of Urology / Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Vanderbilt Univ.
The real opportunity is opening new procedures and fields to the benefits of improved tools and performance ... robotics is just one piece of this evolution, albeit a big one. Engineering, materials science, optics, sensing, data, ML are all empowered and allowed impact by the digital robotic and electronic interfaces. So much time, energy, $$$ and discussion is spent and lost in trying to "compete" and take a small piece of Intuitive's conquered territory, at least in the U.S.. This seems now to be a flawed plan (although understand how many got here as they saw the ISRG hockey stick valuation curve and felt the erosion of their sales of high ASP disposables during that time for the strategics). AGREE with him that the future of surgical and procedural innovation is to add value for patients, surgeons, and national healthcare costs. Companies like Virtuoso Surgical, Inc., Medical Microinstruments, Inc. and Francis Medical seem poised to add valuable and actionable improvements to needed areas of patient care and disease outcomes. The Virtuoso Surgical system is not FDA approved or for sale in the U.S.

Japanese tech firms are advancing in the robotic surgery market, developing innovations to improve medical care and address the nationwide doctor shortage. Sony Group introduced a microsurgery assistance robot prototype, which enhances hand movements for delicate procedures and includes a high-definition display for detailed visualization. Mikami Kei from Sony highlighted the system's ability to enhance human skills, potentially expanding advanced medical care. Medicaroid, a Japanese startup, has a robot that has assisted in over 5,000 laparoscopic surgeries since 2020, supported by Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Competition in the market has increased as patents for the US-designed Da Vinci surgical system began expiring. #robotics

Will AI eventually take over the role of surgeons? A recent event highlighted the potential of telesurgery, leveraging advanced robotics and technology. In a remarkable demonstration, a surgeon remotely performed a procedure on a banana. Personally, I'm skeptical about AI completely replacing surgeons. While telesurgery and robotic assistance can enhance certain aspects of surgical procedures, the complexity of human anatomy and the need for real-time problem-solving and emotional intelligence are areas where human surgeons excel. AI might be a great tool, but the irreplaceable human touch in surgery will likely keep surgeons at the forefront.
