🎉 Congratulations to Robert Heidepriem, MD and Christopher Griggs, DO for completing the 50th TCAR procedure at TMH. 🎉
TCAR, or transcarotid artery revascularization, is a minimally invasive procedure to clear and open a narrowed carotid artery, the large blood vessel in the neck that carries oxygen-rich blood to the brain. In this procedure, the surgeon uses a surgical balloon and stents to reopen the narrowed artery. What makes TCAR unique is that the surgeon uses a blood flow reversal during the procedure that allows the brain to remain oxygenated while reducing the risk of arterial plaque reaching the brain, significantly reducing the risk of stroke.
In addition to a significantly reduced risk of stroke, patients that choose TCAR are less likely to suffer from facial numbness or loss of function, have less pain over time and have minimal post-procedure recovery time, allowing patients to get back to normal activities almost immediately after the procedure.
