A segment discussing the new bill passed today. “The bill, known as the “Protect Our Loved Ones” Act, authorizes a local law enforcement agency to develop and maintain a database, known as a “Persons with Disabilities Registry,” of persons who may have certain developmental, psychological, or other disabilities or conditions, including but not limited to, autism spectrum disorder, Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia disorder, and Down syndrome, that may be relevant to interactions with law enforcement.” https://lnkd.in/eQbWigmD #cbs12news #cbs12 #newbill #familypractice #palmbeachcounty #mobilemedicine #familynursepractitioner #mentalhealthawareness #psychologicaldisability #lawenforcement #protectlovedonesq https://lnkd.in/esK4WtCM

Just as Oregon is considering a bill to make assaulting a nurse a misdemeanor, Tennessee has introduced SB1709/HB1628, which proposes similar measures. If enacted, this bill would establish a Class A misdemeanor for assaults within healthcare facilities, with a mandatory fine of $5,000 and a minimum 30-day sentence. It also includes making aggravated assaults in such facilities a Class A felony, with a $15,000 fine and a minimum 90-day sentence. Unfortunately, both bills overlook provisions for individuals with disabilities. This oversight could disproportionately affect people with disabilities, especially those who are autistic, making it even more challenging for them to access care. #HealthcareSafety #DisabilityRights #AutismAdvocacy #AccessToCare #HealthcareLegislation

Nondiscrimination counsel to hospitals and health systems 🩺 Compliance, Investigations, and Litigation
HHS OCR and DOJ have entered into a Voluntary Resolution Agreement with a skilled-nursing facility which resolves allegations that the facility denied admissions to individuals due to their taking of methadone to treat opioid use disorder. Under the VRA, the facility has agreed to revise its admissions policy; train admissions personnel on federal civil rights law; update customer service intake scripts to reflect the need for reasonable accommodations for disabilities; and to conduct an individualized assessment based on current medical knowledge before denying admission based on safety criteria. A link to the VRA is in the comments below. #healthlaw #healthcare #healthequity

#JAACAPOpen study using #CDC data finds up to 77% of children with #autism or another developmental disability had fewer allied or behavioral healthcare services during #COVID19 #pandemic. Some caregivers reported they were unable to use #telehealth services for their child, and as few as 38% received training to deliver services at home. Parent support and #telehealth delivery of services for children with special needs may help reduce service disruption during public health emergencies. https://lnkd.in/e-rB2Jd2
