Here is an essential insight into health equity: the lack of screening and early breast cancer detection amongst foreign-born Hispanic women. Additionally, the ACS report below reinforces the conclusion of the NIH affiliated health equity study to encourage screenings via education and in-language communications. Notice that traditional social or socioeconomic risks do not appear to be a significant factor. Excerpt We observed that Hispanic/Latina women have higher odds of never and dated breast cancer screenings compared to US-born White women. Birthplace and race/ethnicity each contribute to disparities in who receives preventative health care in the United States. It is critical to include birthplace when evaluating health behaviors in minority groups. NIH affiliates 12 February 2022 https://lnkd.in/gcs4t6SX

Research from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine highlights a significant gap in the investigation of chronic conditions affecting women. The report emphasizes the urgent need for increased efforts by organizations like the National Institutes of Health to address issues leading to disparities in medical treatment for women. Women bear a disproportionate burden of chronic illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease and depression, as revealed in the study requested by NIH’s Office of Research on Women’s Health. The report, spanning 500 pages, advocates for targeted initiatives, spearheaded by NIH, to improve diagnostic tools for female-specific conditions like endometriosis and to differentiate overlapping symptoms among various chronic diseases. #genderdisparities #publichealth #research #womenshealth https://lnkd.in/ehtDJq9G

Board Director | Former Executive Advisor to Veterans Affairs Secretary | Government Strategic Partnerships| Healthcare | Scale Expert
It has been 30 years since the The National Institutes of Health implemented the Revitalization Act of 1993, a law which established guidelines that women and minorities should be included in all clinical trials and research funded by the NIH. A Women's Health Access Matters, RAND Corporation report found that only 4.5% of coronary artery research, 7% of autoimmune rheumatoid arthritis research, 12 % of Alzheimer’s research, and 15 percent of lung cancer research are allocated to projects focused specifically on women. Adding just $350 million in funding across these four disease areas, brain, heart, cancer, and autoimmune, that differentially and disproportionately impact women, would generate nearly $14 billion in economic returns that benefit everyone. With a rallying cry of #3Not30, WHAM seeks to: 1️⃣ Double the Budget: Double the NIH budget for women’s health research and double VC investment, focusing on underfunded areas like Heart Disease, Cancer, Autoimmune Disease, and Brain Health. 2️⃣ Improve Diversity and Access to Clinical Trials: Increase diversity and improve access to clinical trials, and quantify the economic benefit of including women. 3️⃣ Mine the Data: Ensure studies analyze and report results by sex, and create a WHAM Accountability Index. Looking forward to learning more about how we can support at WHAM's Forum on April 10th . This event focuses on sharing concrete action plans to advance these goals and improve women's health outcomes, with support from The National Institutes of Health , Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) Northwell Health ,KPMG, FNIH and more. Yesterday, President Biden signed an executive order outlining new actions prioritizing women’s health research and innovation. As part of The White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, this EO ensures women will get answers when it comes to questions about their health. The needs of women impacted by lung cancer are central to GO2’s policy initiatives. This executive order and the other new actions provide an opportunity to highlight lung cancer’s exceptionally deadly and devastating impact on women. We look forward to working with the administration to fundamentally change how we approach women’s health research and confront lung cancer in meaningful ways. We know that equitable health research and access to care is crucial for our wellbeing. That’s why we are celebrating the new Executive Order to expand research on women’s health. Did you know? National Core Indicators collects data on older adults and people with disabilities yearly, including info on access to health care like cancer screenings. Current NCI data shows that women with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) receive cervical cancer screenings at much lower rates than peers without IDD. While breast cancer screening rates are similar for those with and without IDD, research suggests people with IDD who live at home miss out more. https://lnkd.in/ekJSKpQi Glad to share our recent publication on the two-year results of the MOSAIC study, the first clinical trial of 0.01% atropine eye drop in a predominantly White, European population. We present some interesting findings particularly in relation to how the COVID-19 public health restrictions impacted treatment efficacy of 0.01% atropine eye drops.

With National Women's Health Awareness Month coming to an end, we'd like to bring your attention to a disease that nearly 1 million women live with in the United States alone. #MultipleSclerosis (#MS) is an autoimmune disease whereby immune cells attack the myelin sheath that lines the nerve fibers of the central nervous system. With non-specific early symptoms, diagnosis is often delayed, despite the disease progressing irreversibly into a debilitating state. There is currently no cure for MS. Instead, treatments focus on symptom management and slowing down progression. This Women's Health Awareness Month, we want to highlight cutting-edge #MolecularImaging research that aims to revolutionize diagnosis of MS and personalized monitoring of its treatment, as patient responses to treatments are highly variable. Positron emission tomography (#PET) is a molecular imaging technique that enables highly sensitive detection of very specific biomarkers in the body. Leveraging this modality, scientists from Stanford University have engineered a tracer with which to specifically detect "culprit" immune cells that infiltrate the central nervous system (#CNS) and partake in demyelination of neurons. Read more about this technology in the recent study led by Professor Michelle L. James' group: https://lnkd.in/gbUDuvwU Let’s continue to #advocate for Women’s Health Awareness year-around and promote: 🧐 Increased Awareness: Educate women and healthcare providers about the signs, symptoms, and impact of multiple sclerosis. 🔬 Access to Innovative Technologies: Advocate for greater access to molecular imaging technologies to improve early detection and management of multiple sclerosis. 💪 Empowerment: Encourage women to speak up about their symptoms to their primary care physicians and seek timely medical care. #WomensHealth #MultipleSclerosis #MS #MolecularImaging #Empowerment

Hey ladies! This past month the Biden administration issued an executive order on advancing women's health research and innovation. These are the primary areas of focus outlined in the EO: • Integrate women's health across the federal research portfolio • Prioritize investments in women's health research • Galvanize new research on women's midlife health • Help assess unmet needs to support women's health research It's no secret that women's health research has been historically underfunded. What amazing potential this EO could mean for women's health outcomes. Below is a visualization (nature, Kerry Smith, 2023) of the life-saving potential impact achieved by doubling the women-focused research budget across 4 conditions that disproportionately affect women – rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease, Alzheimer’s disease and lung cancer. Incredible! Check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e2XUbrZG
