Measles : half of the world at risk for not being vaccinated, and the other half for listening to a series of falsehood on measles ranging from Physicians for Informed Consent to Florida's Lapado. When one think that measles was almost eradicated in most of both North America and Europe, it appears clear that disease amnesia led to vaccination amnesia, with not enough children being fully vaccinated to prevent the crisis we are now seeing. Cases last year were already up 79% to over 300,000, according to WHO data, - thought to represent just a fraction of the total. Outbreaks have been reported in all WHO regions with the exception of the Americas until recently where such have emerged throughout the US and Canada. https://lnkd.in/e8wrSmBv

It's both heartbreaking and infuriating that in this age of evidence-based medicine, a disease like measles which had been virtually eradicated in Canada, needlessly claimed an unvaccinated young child's life. Antivax, conspiracy-theory sentiments are still unfortunately held by a growing number well-meaning parents who think they know more than the medical professionals recommending vaccination against the potentially deadly disease. The trend is troubling with 22 new measles cases in Ontario alone this year. The number of measles cases is rising in the U.S. and worldwide. The World Health Organization's global data reveals that reported cases increased worldwide from more than 170,000 cases in 2022 to more than 320,000 cases in 2023. The first several months of 2024 have seen nearly 100,000 measles cases. Reported data is likely to severely undercount the number of cases. 🩺🌍 Tackling Measles: A Global Call to Action 🌐 Measles, a highly contagious viral disease, still claims young lives globally despite a proven vaccine. Vaccination cut global measles deaths by 73% from 2000-2018, yet it persists in many developing countries, causing over 140,000 deaths in 2018. Shockingly, 95% of these deaths occur in nations with low per capita incomes and weak health infrastructures. Member States across all WHO Regions are committed to measles elimination goals, with WHO leading coordination efforts for immunization and surveillance activities. Measles spreads via droplets and initial symptoms include fever, runny nose, and a characteristic rash. Severe cases affect malnourished children, particularly those lacking vitamin A or with weakened immune systems. Routine measles vaccination, coupled with mass campaigns in countries with low coverage, is crucial for reducing global deaths. The safe, effective, and inexpensive measles vaccine, in use since the 1960s, is recommended by WHO for all susceptible individuals. Despite a vaccine existing for half a century, measles is reemerging in several countries globally. Cases have reached historically high levels, with 2023 seeing a 30-fold increase in a single year in the World Health Organization European region alone. This is cause for great concern. Measles is the most highly contagious infectious disease worldwide and is fatal in up to 15% of infected individuals. Even more alarming is that most of these cases have occurred among non-immunized populations. Worse still, some of our most vulnerable in society remain at the greatest risk — the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that over a quarter of a million unvaccinated kindergarteners entered schools in the U.S. last year. This underscores the significance of recognizing and rectifying disparities in immunization to achieve and sustain widespread immunization coverage globally. 📖 We are thrilled to announce the publication of our latest report on the burden of pneumococcal disease in Australia. 📊 Based on robust evidence, meticulous epidemiological analysis and the support of our expert Advisory committee, our team has developed six recommendations to address this burden. These recommendations can deliver tangible and sustainable outcomes for the health and well-being of all Australians. 🔎 Here’s a sneak peak of our recommendations: 1.     Develop a national PD strategy to reduce the burden of disease. 2.     Enhance surveillance and testing practices for PD to ensure better data are available to quantity the true burden of disease. 3.     Provide funded PD vaccines through the NIP for those with identified at-risk conditions. 4.     Through a targeted PD awareness campaign, provide information to empower and enable informed decisions about PD prevention. 5.     Incorporate NIP vaccination schedule into prescribing and practice software. 6.     Implement opportunistic vaccination programs and wrap around services to enhance vaccination delivery. A cause for concern … Measles is the most highly contagious infectious disease worldwide and is fatal in up to 15% of infected individuals. Globally, there has been a drop in childhood vaccinations over the course of the COVID pandemic. This is likely due to a range of factors including declining trust in vaccines, misinformation and disruptions to access.
