Scalable Repeatable Process Most businesses never figure this out and just go round and round and round spinning their wheels. Today our youngest son Dash went in for Surgery. 6:00am arrival time was the request. I assumed Diana and I would be 1 of 2 in the waiting room. 8 families were already seated and signed in. One by one each family was called, the nurses and all staff were extremely pleasant and had the same process (you could hear this in each “room” curtains) I said to myself these folks are TRAINED properly. Nurse 1 Introduction eye contact Gown Stuffed Animal Frog iPad Nurse 2 Introduction eye contact Confirmation on surgery The process after surgery Meds Doc 1 ( Anesthesiologist ) eye contact Introduction Confirmation on surgery Process of anesthesia Doc 2 (Surgeon) eye contact Intro not needed we know her Confirming the surgery Post Surgery process 2 week follow up Post Op Nurse 1 calls us into room- Doc comes out with update Nurse 2 15 minutes later calls us into get the Dash man. National Time Out Day is June 12, 2024! The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), of which I am a member, is committed to safe surgery together. Since 2004, AORN and the Joint Commission have recognized National Time Out Day to bring greater awareness to the safe surgery practice of taking a “time out” before operative and other invasive procedures to prevent wrong site, wrong patient, wrong procedure surgery. This year, National Time Out Day will be honored in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers around the country on June 12. The National Time Out Day initiative supports the Joint Commission’s Universal Protocol and builds greater awareness among surgical team members. The initiative's goal is to prevent errors by ensuring that all members of the surgical team pause before invasive procedures, so they can communicate as a group and confirm key information about the patient and the procedure. Wrong patient, wrong site, and wrong procedure surgeries are tragedies. As a perioperative nurse, I am committed to helping reduce surgical error and improve patient outcomes by taking a time out for every patient, every time. Recognition of National Time Out Day will bring awareness to this important patient safety practice and can help to improve surgical outcomes nationwide.
