🌍 Recently attended the #rawmaterialsweek and dove into insightful discussions, particularly the session focusing on the #ESG Aspects of the CRM Act. Key takeaways from industry experts shed light on the imperative steps for sustainable progress. 🔄 The required conditions to implement the ESG standards in the CRM Act were highlighted by Alessandra Zampieri, DG JRC, Sustainable Resources : - developping knowledge on recycling waste, - creating favourable economic conditions for waste streams, - establishing a fair market promoting sustainability, - and having a strong collaboration between the institutions and the industry 🛑 Benjamin Katz from OECD emphasised that the misguided aim of "risk free value chains" is deterring investment in complex jurisdictions. He stresssed the importance of due diligence for business intelligence and the required coordination of efforts to set high ESG standards accross strategic countries and among competitors. 🔗 Eva Mayerhofer, Head of Environment Policy Unit at European Investment Bank, underlined the CRM Act challenge: achieving operational harmonisation, and ensuring coherence and consistency between different policies. 🌱 Åsa Jackson, EVP People and Sustainability at Boliden, highlighted the pivotal role of investing in research and development for environmental and social advancements. ♻ Michal Pinter, corapporteur of the EESC opinion on the CRM-Act and CCMI delegate, pinpointed the role of secondary raw materials to help reduce reliance on uncertain raw materials. 🎯 Julia Poliscanova (she/her), Senior Director Transport & Environment, expressed that though targets are not binding, success in a decade would translate into amplified processing capabilities and more diversified value chains. 🌟 Investing in responsible and sustainable practices and harmonising policies remains pivotal for a resilient and responsible future. A bit late to the party, but it was great to host this panel last week at the UN Global Compact Network UK event at the The Conduit with Maria Carvalho from NatWest Group, Khanh Mach from Quorn Foods, Sandrine Ricard from Pernod Ricard and Eleanor Besley-Gould from Xynteo. Thanks Lily Venables for organising. The discussion was about where companies are at on their 2030 targets in line with the #SDGs. It’s a bit of a daunting time given how much we still plan to achieve in the next few years. If you include the one that’s about to happen, we have 6 harvests left to get some serious 💩 done. Key takeaways for me were: 1) pre-competitive efforts are absolutely key to solving the sustainability issues we face. A degree of competition around sustainability between companies is healthy but we must identify where honest collaboration is needed. Coalitions like the UN Global Compact Network UK, Sustainable Markets Initiative and WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development are crucial here. 2) we have to make this a financial no brainer, particularly for farmers. All the risk and bureaucracy cannot fall on their shoulders. This will take investment from the private sector to bridge the transition gap, but critically also the development of a long term business proposition for regenerative agriculture. 3) transparency and the use of harmonised data will be game-changing when it comes to procurement but also financial decision making. A common framework of metrics provides the glue which sticks all the different actors operating in the food system together, ensuring we all all pushing in the same direction, rather than 8 different ones..
