I had McDonald for breakfast today 🍟🍔 but… You see every morning we wake up in the morning and get ready for the hustle ahead work. We need to make sure we reach the office on time, but sometimes… we don’t have time for breakfast. This is where I found how perfectly McDonalds fits into my user journey in the morning. 🌅 It’s convinient 🤷♂️ - Location perfectly sits around housing areas, Drive through without even getting out of the car! 🚗 Low barrier of entry 🤷♂️- Bargain McSaver at RM6.50! It solves the problem 🤷♂️- I was hungry. 🥹 The whole process fits into the User’s Journey perfectly as we head off to work. It was easy and did not require much effort to take up. 👃The smell becomes the ad 🍟 McDonald's Nederland has decided to employ a unique strategy to generate buzz about the #brand. Normally, the visual and sound components are essential to any brand, but McDonald's has decided to voluntarily deprive itself of them. The brand used empty #billboards in shades of red and yellow that are vaguely associated with fast food and have the distinct aroma of McDonald's #frenchfries.🍟 Briefly, what is the central idea? Smell is the most effective sense for recalling exciting memories. One of the most intriguing aspects of McDonald's is its association with nostalgia and good times. The brand therefore asks itself if the smell of its iconic French fries is enough to trigger a positive reaction in passers-by. Apparently, the answer is yes; the brand has been able to establish itself in the general culture, and the results are as expected. Given the impressive campaign #coverage, McDonald's is likely to be satisfied with this result. It is great to see McDonald's not only have a global marketing system, but also encourage local teams to experiment. 😄

𝙃𝙢𝙢… 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙨𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙚. #CX is all about engaging as many senses as you can, right? And the smell of bread baking or meat grilling can certainly tempt us to buy. (Indeed, many experiments show that, like #Pavlov’s dogs, we actually start salivating!) McDonald's in Holland is currently experimenting with plain billboards whose only message comes in two forms: the distinctive colours of the brand, (red or yellow,) and the smell of French fries, or "chips" as normal mortals call them. These billboards are tactically and intentionally wheeled into the general area of a store, and when you walk closer, you detect the aroma. The management team is confident that the smell alone will be enough to tempt consumers in, and then, using the classic #upsell techniques, they can persuade you to also buy burgers and drinks. 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠? It’s certainly innovative, and customers like something new... particularly in the short term. Only time will tell if it’s a successful strategy. But I think that there are also some cautions that one needs to think through… 👃 If the smell is actually artificially created in a lab, or if they use real chips that are a bit stale, it will be off-putting. 👃 Will customers feel that McDonald’s is a bit creepy trying to manipulate their behaviour in some dystopian way? Whenever I smell the rich orange fragrance in food, I recall vividly that crisp afternoon walking the back streets of the Latin Quarter in Paris and the crepe (soaked in Grand Marnier) that I bought from the street vender, all those years ago. Marketing and Brand Awareness are critical to a business. Even when brands (or Big Mac's) are already well known across the world! Imagine if McDonald's stopped all advertising tomorrow. There is still a good chance that they will be the first place people think of when looking for a fast food meal for a short while yet. However, after an extended period of time of advertising hiatus, McDonald's would begin to fade into obscurity. As a result, other fast-food restaurants would attempt to take over the newly opened market and be the new market leader. By reminding your target audience of your existence and the benefits you offer, you can make sure your business remains relevant and stays ahead of the competition.
