The vision for Battery Park City, the New York neighborhood located on Lower Manhattan’s west side, once looked very different from what is there today. A master plan for the area devised in 1969 called for a colossal megastructure running the entire length of the area. Revisions (and a recession) led to a scaled-down yet still quite radical concept that featured residential pods connected by elevated skyways, reported Bloomberg. "With public frustration and financial challenges mounting, a new vision emerged in 1979, one that applied the lessons of the urbanist giant Jane Jacobs and incorporated the existing grid of Manhattan. Instead of one single structure or concept, it allowed for multiple developers to take on parcels over time, while still facilitating a singular vision for park space, public art and other amenities." "This new direction was the work of Cooper Robertson (then Alexander Cooper Associates), a firm that has gone on to work on other mega-developments in New York and beyond. Donald Clinton, a planner with the firm since 1985 (and a partner since 1995), has worked on many of New York’s defining 21st-century projects, including the urban design framework for Hudson Yards and planning and design for the Greenpoint and Williamsburg waterfront redevelopment in Brooklyn." "Clinton, who retired from the firm at the end of December, spoke with Bloomberg CityLab about his experience as a planner for mega-scale developments." https://lnkd.in/gMYWQaZZ #unitedstates #development #newyork #megaprojects
