Forever young. I have always had a certain attraction to playgrounds, and over the years, it has stayed with me. Years ago, I was drawn to them like all kids do. Now, in some cases, I see them as modern urban development projects that aim to enhance cities and citizens' experiences in public spaces, promoting inclusivity and accessibility. Some of these projects that we can see around the world are truly fascinating, of high quality, innovative, and very stimulating; they make our minds feel like children again. In fact, they are exercises in creativity that are very comprehensive and complex. 100architects specializes in street architecture and urban interventions, creating innovative solutions that foster joyful social interactions, with projects heavily focused on color as energy and playfulness, regardless of age or social status, promoting learning through play and social engagement. In Vita Verde, we design spaces that tell stories. How do we accomplish that? Primarily, we focus on a concept. It is the foundation of our design process and helps us guide the development. The idea can come from anywhere. Something we derive from the in-depth conversation with our clients, a sentiment, an experience, a specific need. Of course, we always combine this creative process with the client’s goals, the constraints and the limitations of each space. “I’m interested in the imagination and creativity of design to transform our world with experiential and poetic spaces for all.” After exploring how we can create #SocialPublicSpaces at this month’s #ShapeMyCity with Churchman Thornhill Finch, landscape architect Sanjana Lokanathan shares her insight into the intricate relationship between space, time, and life. What are you interested in? The intricacies and the interweaving of spaces and life through time, constantly accruing meaning through the stories that unfold within, never ceases to amaze me. During the course of my masters, I came upon this thread that one of the aims of the surrealist is the transcendence of everyday reality and unveiling of the extraordinary within the mundane. I’m interested in the imagination and creativity of design to transform our world with experiential and poetic spaces for all – human and non-human. What building or place inspires you? Salk Institute by Louis Kahn is one of the projects that truly inspires me. The fluid interface between the built and the unbuilt responds poetically to the landscape it sits in and the sky that wraps all around. It brings into focus our senses to the rhythms of the natural world that are omnipresent but go unnoticed, creating an atmospheric space with meaning and beauty. What piece of advice would you give to your teenage self? To believe in and be kind to yourself, no matter what anyone says – and to do the things you love, fervently, and as obsessively as you want. Perhaps also not to try and define myself into who I want to be, but rather to pursue things that give me joy whether there’s an end goal or not. This quote by Oscar Wilde really resonates with me: “I am a person who does things – I write, I act – and I never know what I am going to do next. I believe in the transformation power interior design brings to our human existence. To lift our spirits, support our well-being, and harmonize the energy of space. We also need to improve our capacity to do so responsibly, by: 💚specifying materials harvested sustainably and with a long service life 💚respecting the welfare of those who fabricate and manufacture the products and materials we depend on 💚respecting and preserving our natural world I've recently been introduced to Fleur Rossdale, an interior designer turned climate action advocate. She’s founded S.O.O.T., A Society of Original Thinkers - a place to unite nations through their love of nature. She's also recently authored 2 children's books “The Woodland Sprite Series," offering a unique perspective on our world's challenges. In her first book, The Temple of the Winds, nature sprites seek solutions to combat pollution, guided by Titania, the Queen of the Fairies. In the second book, "The Journey," Fleur explores innovative approaches to address melting Arctic ice. In this excerpt, she highlights an innovative concept: “My name is Salter, he said with an air of superiority. "I harness wave energy to manufacture clouds to provide shade during summer daylight at the North Pole. I aim to build hydro-foil, wind-powered ships as spray boats," These stories highlight the intricacies of our challenge — every small act matters. You matter. No one is too small to make a difference. I’m grateful to learn about all initiatives that will help inspire solutions to curtail - or better yet, reverse the impact of climate change. I believe we can - if only we will converge in the effort. As designers, it is upon us to be advocates for more than just pretty spaces; we have the capacity and tools to contribute for a better future.
