Beginning today - September 29, 2023 - #SEPTA customers can tap their #contactless credit card, debit card, smart phone or watch to ride SEPTA buses, trolleys, and subways. Regional Rail will follow in early 2024. SEPTA joins a growing number of transit systems around the world that are accepting contactless payments. “This technology makes SEPTA more convenient for everyone to use SEPTA – whether you are a regular customer, occasional rider or a new customer,” said SEPTA General Manager/CEO Leslie Richards. “By giving our riders the option to pay their fares with what they already have in their pockets, we are making our system easier to use. This will be critical as we continue with efforts to rebuild ridership.” Riders on SEPTA’s city and suburban buses, trolleys, Market-Frankford Line, Broad Street Line, and Norristown High Speed Line can simply tap any credit or debit card, in physical form or through apps like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay at a turnstile and as they board a bus or trolley. Contactless does not replace SEPTA Key cards – however it provides a simple solution for occasional riders who want to enjoy the same benefits as cardholders including a discounted $2 one-way fare and up to two transfers. A lot of people find it strange that I still use an Oyster card. I'll be honest, it's not the smoothest system. Top-ups on the app take half an hour to process. Top-ups in stations require chip and PIN, with most ticket machines not taking contactless. But there are a few reasons I stick with it. First, it's connected to my national Railcard, so I get 1/3 off at off-peak times. Second, I prefer keeping my cards and phone tucked away while traveling. With the Oyster, I don't have to faff around with my purse or bringing up a digital wallet. And finally, I guess there's a bit of nostalgia. Oyster cards remind me of coming up to London before I lived here; of how sophisticated I felt the first time I used one instead of a fiddly paper ticket. It was revolutionary at the time. I'm always amazed how different transport payments are in different places. This year alone I've done everything from app payments with Poland's Jakdojade to paying in exact change on a bus in Dublin. 🚀 Big news for Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) riders and Interac Corp. users!🍁 Debit and Credit is now a contactless payment option for adult fares across the TTC network. Starting tomorrow, August 15, riders can now pay directly from their cards, no need for loading passes or buying tickets. It's impressive that this was done with the Presto network. Presto was set up as a stand-alone payments network that ties together 11 independent transit agencies. Presto acts like a bank, processing loading and spending on behalf of the independent agencies. The program is funded by taking a portion of each transaction processed. To coordinate the roll out of contactless payments across the platform for multiple agencies is impressive! Last week, I was in London 🇬🇧 and was thoroughly impressed by their transit system - especially the contactless payment system. It was seamless, efficient, and customer-friendly, with smart rules like not being charged twice for scanning a bus after taking the tube and automatically calculating at the end of the day whether a day pass was more cost effective based on number of times transit was used. All of this is more complicated as it requires validations, transfers, and proof of payments, and addressing load delays at each terminal but a glimpse into what can be accomplished. Excited to see how this transforms the transit experience for riders. Three quarters of global transactions are in Asian nations, and the bulk of the rest are in Africa / ME.
