The primary focus for Breakthrough Public Schools (BPS) continues to be literacy. Breakthrough’s teachers and leadership are focused on helping scholars who have been the furthest behind to improve, with the goal of having every child able to read and comprehend at grade level or above.
Their efforts in the 2022-2023 school year have resulted in positive gains in literacy! BPS has decreased the number of scholars who are 2 grade levels behind in reading by 24% and math by 29%. Additionally, the network more than doubled the percentage of scholars on grade level for literacy and math.
Let’s keep the momentum going! Support our efforts in Learn to Read ➡️ Read to Learn by donating at bit.ly/FOBDonate.
We celebrate and say a big thank you to our donors who gave generously over the New Year! Their contributions allowed us to sponsor 8 more school children in the Mukuru slum in Nairobi, Kenya. In total, we are now sponsoring 25 primary and 19 secondary school children for their 2024 school fees, uniforms, learning materials, and school lunches.

Teachers play such an important role in shaping the minds of our future generations. Take a moment this week to show appreciation for all the hard work and dedication they put into their job every day! One way to show support is by donating to organizations that support teachers, such as the Million Dollar Teacher Project. Additionally, you can donate directly to classrooms to help provide necessary supplies for students. Just ask your nearest school, teacher friends, or send me a message!
Another way to show support is by recognizing and thanking teachers on social media. Post about a teacher's dedication and tag them and their school to show your appreciation publicly.
If you are a teacher, don't forget to take advantage of some special deals and discounts that are available during Teacher Appreciation Week. Check out this list of places where you can score some great deals: https://shorturl.at/oyzCM

These students' 101 reasons to read are OUR 101 reasons to give. The bright minds of Cozine Elementary School (plus two graduates from our Readers in Training program) share stories on why reading is important to them.

On Thursday I had my first session as a stand in online reading volunteer with Doorstep Library. It was an absolute delight to be able to read with the children, and hear their thoughts and opinions. One of them disagreed with a fact: 'Luxembourg is definitely not a micro state'!
I joined this organisation, because reading is one of my ways to escape and to learn. I believe that the ability to read is an essential life skill. If you can read you can work things out.
I wanted to help those struggling with their reading, but when I was undergoing training I came across some pretty shocking statistics:
1 in 4 eleven year olds are not able to read or write properly when they start secondary school: Fair Education Alliance Rpt Card 2014
❗ 1 in 3 parents struggling with the rising cost of living are buying fewer for books for their children: National Literacy Trust 2023
❗ 1 in 3 parents don't read their children a bedtime story due to stress and lack of time: Littlewoods Study 2013
❗ The gap between rich and poor students has widened by 46% during lockdown: The challenges facing schools and pupils September 2020
📣 Doorstep Library is reading charity, and they need online reading volunteers. You can be regular volunteer, or stand in volunteer filling to cover regular volunteers. If you can spare a couple of hours a week (term time only), then I urge to get in touch with Doorstep Library.

Well done Holy Cross! Effective literacy instruction is crucial for closing achievement gaps and promoting academic success for all students. Integrating neuroscience results into literacy instruction allows educators to tailor their teaching methods to align with how the brain processes language and literacy skills.
