Let me (re)introduce myself. I have always been fascinated by the power of the mind and the power of plants. I began studying neuroscience and then began studying blue green algae in the early 2000s. I as I was studying algae, I discovered how this ingredient triggered the release of stem cells from the blood marrow. Now generate human astrocytes from stem cells using small molecules! https://lnkd.in/gjv5zNvQ ✨ With a focus on efficiency and simplicity, this protocol by Katarina Stoklund Dittlau, Abinaya Chandrasekaran, Kristine Freude, and Ludo Van Den Bosch at Leuven Brain Institute and University of Copenhagen (Københavns Universitet) utilizes small molecules to differentiate hiPSCs into astrocytes over 25 days, followed by a maturation period of 4 weeks. ✨The best part? These hiPSC-derived astrocytes can be cryopreserved at every step, offering convenient pauses and cell banking opportunities. Astrocytes play a crucial role in neurodegenerative diseases like ALS, shifting from supporting neurons to becoming toxic. Understanding this shift is key for therapy and adopting such an effective culturing protocol could just be the next step forward for researchers. Researchers set up a comprehensive, time-course study of transcription factor (TF)-induced iPSC-derived neurons in a long-term culture. By utilizing transcriptome analysis with ICC and functional assays, they were able to paint a clear picture of the previously undescribed synapse maturation process in iPSC-derived neurons.
