🤔 How can neurons predict your movement using both past and future input? 🧠 This new publication from the Buzsaki Lab, using our Janus Double-sided Probe, dives into hippocampal neurons' spatial tuning properties and memory functions. But are these distinct features or part of a dynamic continuum? Recent findings suggest that the "splitter" feature, which distinguishes different types of information processing, exhibits variation across trials and spatial positions. Typical place fields within the same neuron can split into subfields based on behavioral choices, with firing patterns evolving independently. Comparing tasks with and without delays, they found differences in neuronal computation, impacting route execution in maze tasks. The fraction of future-choice-predicting neurons rapidly decreases after reward consumption, affecting decision-making. Splitter features extend beyond hippocampal neurons, found in other brain regions like the entorhinal and prefrontal cortex. Optogenetic experiments suggest the entorhinal cortex's role in selecting future paths. Interneurons, influenced by pyramidal cell partners, show biased firing control, with those having fewer partners exhibiting higher selectivity. This highlights the intricate interplay between neuronal populations across different environments. Their findings shed light on the dynamic nature of hippocampal computation and its implications for memory and decision-making. Understanding how the brain processes sound is crucial for unraveling the complexities of auditory perception and cognition. The latest study from the Wang lab at Johns Hopkins University employs advanced imaging techniques to map the tonotopic organization of the auditory cortex in awake marmosets, a model that offers unique advantages due to its relatively flat cortical surface. This research provides new insights into the functional architecture of the primate auditory cortex, challenging existing models and highlighting the potential for future discoveries. 🧠 Comprehensive Tonotopy Mapping: They've provided the most detailed tonotopic mapping in awake primates, discovering previously unknown gradients and validating them with multiple imaging methods. 🧠 New Tonotopic Gradient: A novel tonotopic gradient rostral to the known RT gradient has been identified, suggesting a need to revise current models of primate auditory cortex organization. 🧠 Methodological Advancements: Their use of through-skull and through-window intrinsic optical signal imaging, along with wide-field calcium imaging, has set a new standard for functional investigations at mesoscopic scales. These findings not only enhance our understanding of the auditory cortex but also pave the way for further research into its complex organization and function. By integrating various imaging techniques, this research group and others can explore the brain's auditory processing capabilities with unprecedented detail and accuracy. 🧠 Visualizing Brain Organoids 🧠 Researchers have conducted an experiment involving human brain organoids, a simplified, miniaturized version of the human brain grown in a laboratory setting The Brain Organoids were monitored through imaging every thirty minutes over the course of one week. The purpose of this monitoring was to observe and document the process of lumen morphogenesis (formation of a cavity within the organoid) as well as the emergence of forebrain progenitor cells (cells that give rise to specific types of brain cells) and neurons (nerve cells). #Research #Neuroscience #Innovation
