Historic focus on student accommodation welcomed The Student Accommodation Council has welcomed the government’s historic recognition in the Budget of the critical role purpose-built student accommodation sector (PBSA) plays in providing a first-class experience for international students but warned against forcing universities to compete directly with the private market. "...the government needs to be careful in how they implement these reforms. There is a lot of capital already invested and looking to invest in Australian PBSA – and we want universities to work with the existing private sector rather than being forced to compete," Torie Brown Executive Director of the Student Accommodation Council said. In the current climate you have to plan even harder before you fly overseas. The accommodation crisis in UK, Canada and slowly even Australia will affect international students the most. So here’s what you do: 👉 Make sure you choose the University also based on its location Vs closest affordable accommodation. 👉 How you will travel to Uni and what is it going to cost you. Keep in mind University accommodation may not be the cheapest option. 👉 Ask the University what they do to assist with finding suitable accommodation. 👉 Factor in rising rental % in the city you going to. In Australia for instance rentals have risen nearly 30% when compared to 2019. 👉 Most effecient step - Network before you leave. Take the lead and reach out to other students joining your intake - plan to share a house or apartment. I have done this back in 2006 and it’s the best thing you can do when it comes to finding accommodation smoothly. I am so happy to be presenting at the 33rd ISANA Conference on the topic：Accommodation: Who Is Responsible? University owned student accommodation are more than just living spaces; they form the heart of a student community. When most students live separately, this community bond weakens. Despite universities investing heavily in community and marketing initiatives to foster a sense of belonging in recent years, what students really need are places where they can live and eat together, maybe even study together after classes, and truly feel a sense of belonging. The absence of affordable university-owned accommodation has already led to a growing financial gap between wealthier students and those with fewer resources, which challenges the fundamental values of Australia. As it stands, only students with substantial financial means can afford accommodation near our campuses. Such a disparity creates an unequal academic environment. I am convinced that public universities must commit to increasing affordable and accessible accommodation and support for all students. The approach of Australian universities in pushing students towards a commercial rental market is both rare and irresponsible, representing a failure in their duty of care. We must acknowledge the universities’ responsibility in this matter and strive to find a solution. #studentaccommodation #internationalstudents #usyd #housing
