Improving the way that energy system data is shared is necessary to decarbonise our power sector by 2030. In 2022, the UK's Energy Digitalisation Taskforce put forward the concept of a ‘digital spine’ – a data sharing infrastructure for the energy system. A data sharing infrastructure would be a set of responsibilities, processes and technical functions that deliver secure data exchange for organisations in the energy sector. This feasibility study was funded by the UK Government’s Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP), and examines the concept, opportunities and attributes of a data sharing infrastructure for the energy system; a ‘digital spine’. 🎯 Trending topic in ENERGY and DATA innovation - Let's talk about #Energy #Data #Spaces Yesterday we wrapped up #ETIPSNET webinar, supported by CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency exploring #hydrogen's impact on grids and Energy Data Spaces where I had the pleasure to co-present our latest publication on this topic. I am especially grateful to Mugur George PAUNESCU for giving our audience context and strategic vision for the path ahead. 📖 Energy Data Spaces (EDS) are the backbone of Europe's digitalized energy future, outlined in the EU's strategic plan for "Digitalising the energy system" and the European #DataAct. 🔝 🌍 These interconnected frameworks facilitate seamless data sharing among stakeholders, vital for integrating renewable energy sources and achieving the ambitious targets of the '#Fitfor55' package and the #RePower plan. At its core, an EDS ensures secure and #regulated #dataexchange, essential for optimizing energy management across various sectors like electricity, gas, heating, cooling, transport, and industry. By fostering communication between Transmission System Operators (#TSOs), Distribution System Operators (#DSOs), #energycommunities, and prosumers, EDS enables efficient grid operation, enhances grid #flexibility, and empowers consumers to participate in flexibility markets. I also had the opportunity to highlight innovative use cases from Begonia Project combining smart grids, energy efficiency and #electromobility. 🏔However, the journey towards widespread EDS adoption isn't without challenges. Technical hurdles, regulatory complexities, and the need for organizational restructuring pose significant obstacles. This is especially crucial in the context of the energy transition combined with digitalization—an ongoing transformation that will extend beyond any one person’s working life. While reflecting on how I could contribute to this, I was approached by Monika Freunek PhD/Dr.-Ing. and Oliver D. Doleski to participate in the first international edition of the Handbook of Electrical Power Systems. Their goal of stimulating dialogue and learning through this book perfectly aligns with my personal intentions and it is an honor to contribute to their book with my article. We are thrilled to have participated in this year’s EM-Power Europe Conference in Munich, Germany! 🗣 This morning, our Secretary General Carmen Gimeno de la Fuente chaired the session “Demand Side Flexibility: The Role of Grid Infrastructure, Market Players and Digitalization in Meeting Consumer Expectations”. The session delved into how digitalization and innovative technologies, such as smart meters, along with market-based solutions, are empowering consumers to become dynamic participants in the energy ecosystem. Digital Twin technology is being adopted across various industries, with its use cases becoming more apparent in industries such as Energy. DNV's latest report highlights some of the successful digital twin use cases as well as the learnings from projects like the FutureGrid Digital Twin project. Our involvement in this project has allowed us to further develop our capabilities in this area, and collaborate with industry partners to create a digital twin that aggregates data from several sources to provide a real-time view of the system. This supports National Gas in their journey to net zero and their key focus of understanding the ways that hydrogen could be used to replace natural gas.
