How often do you sweat over the right gift to give? Is it whether to give flowers because you messed up, deciding if a gift card is too impersonal for your best friend's birthday, or perhaps it's choosing between a book and a journal for your colleague who's always jotting down notes. What about when it comes time to reward our remote teams? Are we just going through the motions with that gift card to Starbucks, or that periodic bonus? What if they hate Starbucks? (ahem...I know...unheard of, right?!). Or, what if extra time off to attend their kids events means more than that end of year bonus (that gets taxed higher anyway?). Instead, how about we just ask or observe and then reward based on what makes those individuals feel valued? This goes a long way, as well, toward building a resilient and productive remote team! When people feel seen and valued, they simply perform better. When the woman handed me a $50 Starbucks gift card, I told her "Thank You", tucked it into my coat pocket and drove home. I have a simple rule when it comes to gifts: I give them to my wife. 😂 When she asked where it came from, I said, "Oh, _____________ gave it to me for the keynote." My wife: "You do know there are people who get paid for speaking, right?" Me: 👀 **** That was ten years ago. I was six weeks removed from getting fired from the Cleveland Browns. I started teaching at the University of Texas, launched a research center, and wrote a couple of books. I’m letting you in on one of my favorite routines that has helped me build some solid relationships. It’s fast, simple, and heartfelt. 💖 Every day, I open social media and look for opportunities to engage. 📱 I open up my stories, watch, and observe. 👀 Here’s what I’m looking for: 🍾 Reasons to celebrate ❤️ People who need encouragement 🍪 Favorite things: food, drinks, activities Then I build conversations around those things. I’ll congratulate, encourage, and chime in on someone’s Starbucks order and share mine, etc. 🎉 I’ll even send Crumbl cookies or a Starbucks gift card to someone who is having a rough time to brighten their day. 🍪☕ Going the extra step in sending messages, a handwritten note, or a small gift means the world to people. 💌🎁 When you’re intentional and genuine about engaging, you build relationships naturally. The importance of recognizing achievement. At the end of every month we tally up the attendance of our members. If a member attends 16 or more classes in that month they're put in a drawing for a prize. Usually a gift card, massage or cash. If that member attends 16 classes three months in a row we get them a custom tee. We use this to signify their devotion to their fitness and overall health. It's so important to address those who are putting in the consistent work. Showing up when they don't want to. Being present when they want to be on the couch. Consistency over everything. Celebrate wins. Express gratitude.
