Key to strengthen the comity of public health at the local level
We are proud of our very own Beeta Rasouli, MPH, ASPPH Director of Advocacy and Federal Affairs, who was featured in a new piece from the American College of Physicians - "Reflecting on ACP’s Position Paper for Public Health: A View From the CDC Lens." Rasouli states that we saw an increased interest in public health careers as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a 20-25% growth in applicants to masters programs. However, in order to meet basic and expected public health standards, the country needs an estimated 80% expansion in public health workforce capacity. ACP emphasizes the importance of "creative strategies to foster and retain public health workers, including loan repayment and competitive pay benefits, additional pay for CDC and other public health staff engaged in intimate work with contagious and deadly diseases, incentives to work in underserved communities—in both rural and urban areas—and promotion of training in novel public health competencies (such as data science)." The Maryland Rural Health Association was proud to present at the last Maryland Commission on Public Health. Maryland’s Commission on Public Health is tasked with assessing the foundational public health capabilities of state and local health departments in Maryland and analyzing the state’s ability to respond to major public health challenges. The Commission will make recommendations for reform in several areas, including the organization of public health departments; information technology, information exchange, and data analytics; workforce; procurement; funding; and communication and public engagement. Executive Director, Jonathan Dayton, says, "It's essential that the commission, in the data collection phase, take into account the counties and jurisdictions that are rural. These communities have significantly different healthcare challenges than urban communities and make up 25% of Maryland's population." https://smchd.org/coph/
