Working while angry can be one of the most challenging experiences for professionals! We're all human and susceptible to emotions like anger, whether in our personal or professional lives. It's inevitable that colleagues or bosses may sometimes get under your skin, making you feel like reacting impulsively. However, physical altercations or any form of aggression are never acceptable in a professional setting. Therefore, it's crucial to maintain a high level of professionalism and handle such situations with care. When faced with difficult situations, here are some steps to consider: 1. Pause - Stop and refrain from reacting immediately to the aggressor in any way. 2. Step away - If possible, remove yourself from the situation immediately. 3. Find calm - Seek something that can immediately help calm you down, whether it's eating something or talking to someone. 4. Think smart - Consider a smart, intelligent, and professional response to the situation. 5. Manage emotions - Don't let your emotions dictate your response in any way. 6. De-escalate - Calmly defuse the situation by taking the high road in the conversation. 7. Focus on the task - Shift your focus back to the job or task at hand to ensure the intended result benefits all parties involved. Remember, life isn't about winning every battle, but about building lasting and productive relationships.

Robert Karasek's Demand-Control model of job stress is over 40-years old but holds up quite well. Have you ever worked in a job with very high task demands combined with low agency/autonomy? Yeah - me too. These roles can be very energizing and engaging in the short run but over time frequently lead to excessive stress, overwhelm and eventually burnout. While not the final word on the topic for sure, here's one list of the top five most stressful careers. Are you surprised to learn that three of the five are first responder roles and that the high demand/low control combination in Karasek's model seems to permeate the list?
