Net Zero Week: Our journey so far🌍 In our commitment to becoming Net Zero by 2030 for Scope 1, 2 & 3 Emissions (according to our Lyreco Carbon Reduction Plan) we thought it would be beneficial to share with you how we are getting on so far, and what we have implemented to help us move towards this ambitious target. 💡 Installation of Smart Led - Throughout our main office building, car park street lighting, and without our NDC and 10 RDCs we have installed SMART LED Lighting. The SMART system incorporates motion sensors, outside light level sensors, and time controls to minimise energy consumption. ☀ Solar Panels - We have 13,860 panels that generate 3 million kWh/year. This is significantly more than the required electricity to power our Telford site (NDC and Head Office). 🚚 Electric Fleet - In 2022, we invested £2.3 million to expand our Electric Van Fleet from 17 to 67, with 30 EV Vans still to be delivered this will take us to 97 within our fleet. The Telford Head Office fleet will be charged using our Solar Panels and REGO Certified Energy supplies. ⚡ REGO Certified Grid Energy - in 2019, we decided to purchase 100% Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certified electricity, meaning we have a Net Zero energy supply not only to Telford Head Office and National Distribution but covering 99% supply of our UK Distribution network. 🔋 On-Site Batteries - Our installation of Tesla 1 MWhr. battery energy storage system (BESS) at our Telford HQ, at the time of installation, was the UK's largest 'behind the meter' installation of its kind, allowing us to store some of the surpluses our Solar Panels create during the day. 🏠 Flexible Working - Allowing our employees to work up to two days a week at home, not allows us to ensure they have a better work-life balance but also reduces the emissions produced by our teams travelling to work. Electrification plays a pivotal role in advancing sustainability across various sectors, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating environmental impact. At the forefront of this transformation is the energy sector, where the shift from coal and natural gas to renewable electricity sources like solar, wind, and hydropower is drastically cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The integration of energy storage solutions, such as advanced batteries, ensures the stability and reliability of these renewable sources, making them viable alternatives to traditional power plants. In transportation, electrification is driving a profound shift towards greener mobility. Electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly replacing internal combustion engine vehicles, reducing tailpipe emissions that contribute to air pollution and global warming. Innovations in battery technology are extending the range of EVs and reducing charging times, making them more convenient and accessible to consumers. Furthermore, the development of electric public transportation systems, including buses and trains, is enhancing urban air quality and reducing the carbon footprint of mass transit. Industry is also benefiting from electrification. Electric machinery and equipment are replacing those powered by fossil fuels, leading to cleaner and more efficient manufacturing processes. This transition is particularly significant in energy-intensive industries such as steel, cement, and chemicals, where electrification can significantly lower emissions. Electrification in buildings is another critical area. The adoption of electric heating, cooling, and cooking appliances, coupled with improved energy efficiency measures, is reducing energy consumption and emissions from residential and commercial buildings. Smart grids and IoT-enabled devices are optimizing energy use, further enhancing the sustainability of electrified buildings. The shift to electrification also supports the development of a circular economy. Electrified systems are often more compatible with renewable energy sources and more easily integrated into sustainable waste management practices. For example, electric motors in appliances and vehicles can be recycled more efficiently than their fossil-fuel counterparts. Widespread adoption of electrification is driving innovation in energy management and storage technologies. Advancements in these areas are not only improving the efficiency and reliability of renewable energy but also facilitating the decoupling of energy production from environmental degradation. Electrification is a cornerstone of sustainable development, offering a pathway to significantly reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and promote cleaner and healthier environments. As technology continues to advance, the role of electrification in achieving global sustainability goals will only become more critical, driving us towards a more resilient and environmentally-friendly future.

Closing the Gap on Clean Energy Supply-Chain Sustainability: The second of 3 Posts: Onshoring/Infrastructure/Data. The Infrastructure Gap: One of the biggest challenges to supply-chain sustainability cited in the survey is the need for transmission, EV chargers and other infrastructure to allow suppliers to reduce their carbon emissions. Climate Group found that 122 global companies have committed to electrifying their combined fleets of 5.5 million vehicles by 2030, up from 209,000 fleet vehicles that had been electrified when the report was published. However, the report acknowledges that insufficient charging equipment may prove to be an obstacle. In response, Electric Power Research Institute’s EVs2Scale2030 initiative aims to reduce the grid constraints hampering EV growth. Similarly, supply-chain capacity is limiting consumer opportunities to purchase EVs. For example, a Sierra Club report found that 66 percent of car dealerships in the U.S. did not have one EV available for sale; of that number, 44 percent said they would sell EVs if the supply chain could deliver them more broadly and ensure support for consumer use. The IRA’s Clean Ports Program allocates $3 billion to electrify port vehicles and operations. However, as with charging infrastructure for consumer vehicles, upgrading ports with charging infrastructure at the required speed is incredibly challenging. Though it would improve the Scope 3 emissions for all companies whose goods pass through the ports, the disruption, delays and downtime caused by upgrading the infrastructure remain daunting.

A robust network of charging stations not only eliminates anxiety related to limited range but also instills confidence in electric vehicle owners, thereby driving mass adoption. This step will accelerate the transition to cleaner transportation systems and pave the way for a greener and more sustainable future.
