If the supply chain is the heart of a company’s operations, supply chain leaders must win the hearts of their teams!   As someone who is developing relationships with their team, suppliers, customers, accounting and legal, being a great relationship builder is a must for any quality supply chain leader.   It’s not just about being in charge of a product’s journey! The ability to use and interpret data, a deep understanding of manufacturing, transporting and warehousing, and the intricacies of financial and contract management are critical skills to possess.   The days of hiring supply chain managers based solely on their ability to purchase goods quickly and at a low cost are over. From Warehouse Worker to Director of Logistics When Sasha first started working in the warehouse of a major retailer, she viewed it mostly as a paycheck. She hadn't given much thought to long-term career goals. But over time, Sasha started to become genuinely interested in the logistics operations. She saw how shipping bottlenecks impacted inventory and sales. She started looking for ways to improve processes and increase efficiency. Sasha suggested some procedural changes to her manager, which ended up significantly reducing shipping delays. Her initiative was noticed by upper management. When a logistics coordinator role opened up, her manager encouraged Sasha to apply. She didn't have a college degree, but her hands-on experience spoke volumes. Sasha dove into logistics studies at night to continue building expertise. Within three years, Sasha was promoted to direct a regional distribution center. She oversaw major expansions to warehouses and fleets. Under her leadership, on-time delivery performance improved dramatically. Now, Sasha is a Director of Logistics at the corporate headquarters. She finds mentoring other warehouse employees who show potential especially rewarding. Sasha's career trajectory demonstrates that ops experience on the ground floor can be a powerful asset.
