After a busy election night, I would draw the following conclusions from the provisional results: ✔ The parliamentary majority supporting the current work of the European Commission would comprise 403 seats (EPP-RE-S&D), potentially enabling the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as the European Commission President. ✔ Meloni has now positioned herself as one of the most powerful figures in the EU, where far-right parties made major gains. ✔ This is the first time that a European election has had such an impact on the national politics of a large member state. In this case, Marine Le Pen and her party have won the elections in France, forcing Macron to dissolve parliament and call new elections. ✔ The European Commission is expected to continue pursuing the Green Deal during the 2024-2029 term, but with reduced intensity and a stronger emphasis on business competitiveness, influenced by the new makeup of the Parliament. #EUelections2024

Contrary to expectations, these EU elections have NOT given the EU away to the far-right. While these far-right, anti-establishment parties secured approximately 25% of the seats, they won’t be able to unite and call the shots. Instead, the pro-EU majority - which has historically been running the EU over the past 50 years - holds. As such, it should be able to form a parliamentary majority supporting the next EU Commission and identify a clear set of political priorities for the next five years. The question remains whether and the extent to which this conventional pro-EU majority will accept to receive the support of additional groups, be on the left (such as the Greens which has been resized) or the right, with Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy & co. This might be needed not only to elect the next EU Commission President but also to pass any legislation proposed by the next EU Commission. We could therefore expect the emergence not of a 'permanent' political majority, but one characterised by variable geometry to be formed on a case-by-case basis depending on the files being presented by the EU Commission to the EU Parliament. While not a new phenomenon (that’s how the EU constitutional setting works), this time it’ll be qualitatively and quantitatively different than before. 10 June 2024 EUROPEAN ELECTIONS Don’t be taken away by the French baiser sur la joue! The European elections caused a political earthquake in France and led to a predictable shift to the Right in the European Parliament. The pivotal party became the People’s Party (it was Renew Europe), marking a significant change in the political landscape. However, the anticipated wave towards the Far Right did not materialise. Top EU positions can easily find the necessary support of the existing four-party alliance. Ursula von der Leyen is closer to being confirmed for a second term as President of the Commission. Broadening the current alliance to the ECR or just Meloni’s Brothers of Italy looks tricky, although not impossible. Despite today’s hit on European assets, market worries are excessive.
