📢 Our Top Story: Big Changes Coming for North Carolina Vets 📢 Edited: The veterinary community in North Carolina is on the brink of a transformative shift! Starting March 1st, 2025 (Confirmed by NORTH CAROLINA VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION), a new state law signed by Governor Cooper, will require veterinarians to report their use of Gabapentin, a medication commonly used for animal pain management. 📅📜 This legislative change aims to bring transparency and accountability to the use of Gabapentin in veterinary practices. The move has ignited discussions within the veterinary profession, especially in the context of ongoing debates about the scientific support for Gabapentin's use in animals. 🤔🐕🐈 Gabapentin has been a staple in veterinary medicine for pain management, but its effectiveness remains a topic of debate. 🤷♂️📚 Richard Joseph, a board-certified veterinary neurologist and founder of Veterinary TeleSpecialty by VOCN, shares his insights on this matter in our exclusive news story. 🎙️👨⚕️ In human medicine, Gabapentin is vital for managing neuropathic pain, altering the way nerves transmit messages in the brain. However, its efficacy in treating deep pain (nociceptive pain) remains unproven. 🧠🚫 The debate continues with studies and case reports painting a complex picture. Some show positive effects in cats with osteoarthritis, while others question its impact on post-surgery pain in dogs. 🐾🐕🐈 It's worth mentioning that in human medicine, Gabapentin's interaction with opioids has led to its reclassification as a controlled medication in some states. North Carolina is now joining this movement. 📃🔐 As the March 1st deadline approaches, veterinarians in North Carolina must adapt to the new reporting requirements for Gabapentin. The landscape of Gabapentin usage in veterinary practice is evolving, and we'll keep you updated on this significant change! 📅💼 Stay tuned for more news and updates here on Vet Candy. Thank you for being a part of our community! 🐾👩⚕️👨⚕️ #VetCandyNews #VeterinaryMedicine #GabapentinDebate #NorthCarolinaVets NORTH CAROLINA VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION #veterinary
